Tethytheria è un clade di mammiferi che include sirenii e proboscidi, nonché l'ordine estinto Embrithopoda, e, forse, i Desmostylia.
Sebbene vi sia un forte supporto anatomico e molecolare per la monofilia di Tethytheria, le interrelazioni tra i taxa inclusi rimangono controverse. I tethytheri sono uniti da diverse caratteristiche anatomiche, tra cui orbite rivolte anteriormente e denti laterali più o meno bilofodonti (doppie creste trasversali sulle corone dei denti). Proboscidea e Sirenia sono collegate tra loro sulla base di caratteri uditivi nelle loro ossa petrosali, ma questo legame potrebbe rappresentare un'omoplasia. I desmostylia, tradizionalmente considerati tethytheri, sono stati assegnati provvisoriamente a Perissodactyla, insieme alla famiglia Anthracobunidae dell'Eocene inferiore, considerato un sister group di Tethytheria.[1][2]
Si ritiene che i Tethytheria si siano evoluti da primitivi mammiferi con gli zoccoli ("condylarthri") lungo le rive dell'antico oceano Tetide.
