Il termine partizione viene usato in senso generico con il significato di separazione in più parti; inoltre viene usato in diverse discipline con parecchi significati specifici; talora è sinonimo di spartizione.

Architettura

  • Una partizione è un elemento architettonico con il compito di separare le stanze di un edificio, senza la possibilità di sostenere dei pesi.
  • In architettura navale una partizione è una sottile parete che separa cabine, depositi e uffici.

Matematica

Computer

  • Una partizione è una suddivisione di un supporto di memoria (memoria centrale, disco, stringa di dischi, ...) in parti gestite indipendentemente.
  • Organizzare un computer di elevata potenza (ad es. un mainframe) come se si trattasse di diversi computer virtuali che operano indipendentemente. Vedi anche LPAR, mainframe IBM, Sun E10.000, HP-UX. alcune industrie costruttrici (ad es. Sun Microsystems) usano il termine dominio invece di partizione. Questa organizzazione può essere effettuata agendo sul software al livello del sistema operativo, o agendo sull'hardware e/o sul firmware.

Informatica

  • Un algoritmo di partizione consiste nel separare una lista in due sottoliste aventi i membri rispettivamente minori o uguali e maggiori di un dato valore; esso è utilizzato dal quicksort e da algoritmi di selezione.
  • A un livello più astratto, nella teoria della computazione si dice partizione l'operazione di dividere un insieme di dati in sottinsiemi costituenti una sua partizione in senso matematico, cioè in modo che ogni elemento appartenga a uno e un solo sottoinsieme.
  • Una partizione (base di dati) è una manovra di suddivisione di una base di dati in più basi di dati in grado di essere utilizzate autonomamente.
