Il primo caso della pandemia di COVID-19 in eSwatini (ex Swaziland) è stato confermato il 14 marzo 2020.

Antefatti

Il 12 gennaio 2020, l'Organizzazione mondiale della sanità (OMS) ha confermato che un nuovo coronavirus era la causa di una nuova infezione polmonare che aveva colpito diversi abitanti della città di Wuhan, nella provincia cinese dell'Hubei, il cui caso era stato portato all'attenzione dell'OMS il 31 dicembre 2019.[3][4]

Sebbene nel tempo il tasso di mortalità della COVID-19 si sia rivelato decisamente più basso di quello dell'epidemia di SARS che aveva imperversato nel 2003,[5] la trasmissione del virus SARS-CoV-2, alla base della COVID-19, è risultata essere molto più ampia di quella del precedente virus del 2003, e ha portato a un numero totale di morti molto più elevato.[6]

Il 5 maggio 2023, l'Organizzazione mondiale della sanità dichiara ufficialmente la fine della pandemia[7][8][9][10][11].

Cronologia

Il 14 marzo è stato confermato il primo caso del paese di COVID-19, si trattava di una donna di 33 anni, tornata dagli Stati Uniti alla fine di febbraio e transitata in Lesotho prima di tornare a casa in eSwatini, è entrata in isolamento.[12] L'11 marzo 2020 sono stati identificati due casi sospetti, il primo una donna di ritorno dalla Danimarca[13] e l'altra una donna che aveva ospitato visitatori dalla Germania.[14]

Il 24 marzo, il ministero della salute ha confermato un quinto caso. Un maschio di 52 anni che aveva viaggiato negli Stati Uniti all'inizio dello stesso mese era risultato positivo.[15]

Il 16 aprile, il paese ha registrato la sua prima morte correlata alla COVID-19, un uomo di 59 anni con diabete come condizione di base.[16]
