New Magic Wand è un brano musicale del rapper statunitense Tyler, the Creator, pubblicato il 17 maggio 2019 come sesta traccia del quinto album in studio Igor.

Descrizione

Jon Caramanica del New York Times ha definito la canzone «una rivisitazione in chiave industrial-funk della musica bass di Miami».[6] La base contiene un mix di sintetizzatori, che è stato descritto come «duro», «basso»,[7] «raccapricciante e inquietante»,[8][9] un «basso statico e vibrante» e «percussioni vertiginose».[7][8] La produzione utilizza anche una serie di voci armonizzate.[9] Tyler ha descritto la canzone come «una versione perfezionata di French!», traccia contenuta nel suo album di debutto Bastard (2009).[10]

Il testo tratta il tema dell'amore non corrisposto, poiché Tyler, the Creator esprime il suo amore verso un'ex partner che però risente per aver scelto un'altra persona al posto suo, oltre ai suoi sentimenti di gelosia e possessività.[7][11][12] Racconta inoltre di aver visto una foto della coppia mentre pensava «I need to get her out the picture / She's really fuckin' up my frame (Devo toglierla dalla foto / Mi sta davvero rovinando l'inquadratura)».[8][9][13] Più tardi Tyler inizia a cantare con voce acuta,[12] dicendo alla sua amata: «Your other one evaporate, we celebrate / You under oath, now pick a side (L'altro è svanito, festeggiamo / Sei sotto giuramento, ora scegli da che parte stare)».[11][12] La canzone include anche una breve frase recitata dal comico Jerrod Carmichael.[8]

Accoglienza

La canzone è stata ben accolta dalla critica musicale. Roisin O'Connor dell'Independent l'ha considerata una delle tracce più significative dell'album Igor.[8] Nick Rosebade di Clash ha affermato che la canzone «ha un sound molto aggressivo e tipico di Tyler».[14] Rowan5215 di Sputnikmusic l'ha considerata una delle «versioni superiori del rap distorto e industriale di Cherry Bomb» presenti nell'album.[15] Daniel Spielberger di HipHopDX ha definito la canzone un «capolavoro cupo»,[16] mentre Steven Edelstone di Paste ha descritto la canzone come caratterizzata da uno strumento particolarmente «più pesante e minaccioso», prima di affermare che il cambio di ritmo fosse «uno dei migliori del decennio, rivaleggiando con quello della frenetica conclusione di DNA di Kendrick Lamar».[17]

Video musicale

Il video musicale del brano è stato pubblicato il 14 maggio 2019, e vede il rapper interpretare il proprio alter ego Igor.[18][19][20][21][22] Il videoclip si apre con lui che si esibisce su un palco con uno sfondo blu, partendo dal ritornello della canzone «Please don't leave me now (Ti prego, non lasciarmi adesso)»,[20] mentre poco dopo, la telecamera allarga l'inquadratura e mostra Tyler che si esibisce in un deserto davanti a un pubblico di cinque persone che ballano freneticamente. Lo si vede poi correre via in lontananza.[18][20][21][22]
