Nausicaa è un dipinto a olio dell'artista inglese Frederic Leighton, realizzato ed esposto per la prima volta nel 1878. Attualmente si trova in una collezione privata.[1]

Storia

Nausicaa venne esposta all'esposizione annuale dell'accademia reale delle arti nel 1878 assieme ad altri tre quadri di Leighton: Avvolgimento della matassa, Serafina (un'altra figura singola) e uno studio.[2][3]

Descrizione

La tela ritrae una figura intera femminile, con degli abiti verdi e bianchi. È Nausicaa, la principessa dei Feaci nell'Odissea. La ragazza scalza si trova in piedi davanti alla soglia di una porta e porta una mano su una guancia. Edgcumbe Staley, nonostante confonda l'isola dei Feaci con Itaca, descrive così il dipinto:[4]

«"Nausicaa" is one of Leighton's best single-figure pictures. She is painted full-length, leaning against a column of her father's palace at Ithaca and watching earnestly for the return of Odysseus. How often Leighton depicted that wistful, yearning look, gazing over the wide sea or peering into the distant perspective! Nausicaa is full of pathos and grace. She supports her burning cheek with her elegant right hand. Her feet are exquisitely modelled—one, slipping off the step, is instinct with life. Her draperies are green and creamy-white. She is a splendid figure of perfect contour.»

Ella è dipinta a figura intera, appoggiandosi a una colonna del palazzo di suo padre a Itaca (sic) e aspettando con fervore il ritorno di Odisseo. Quanto spesso Leighton raffigurò quello sguardo nostalgico e bramoso, mentre osserva il mare ampio o scruta nella veduta distante! Nausicaa è piena di pathos e grazia.
