NGC 3649 è una galassia a spirale barrata situata nella costellazione del Leone, a una distanza di circa 226 milioni di anni luce dalla nostra Via Lattea.[1]
Scoperta
La galassia è stata scoperta il 15 febbraio 1784 dall'astronomo britannico di origine tedesca William Herschel.[1]
Oltre un secolo dopo, il 22 aprile 1889, la galassia è stata nuovamente osservata dall'astronomo statunitense Lewis Swift e la sua descrizione (con una leggera imprecisione nelle coordinate) è stata in seguito inserita nell'Index Catalogue con la designazione IC 682.[1]
Descrizione
NGC 3649 presenta una larga riga a 21 cm dell'idrogeno neutro.[2]
Secondo il database SIMBAD, NGC 3649 è una galassia attiva.[4]
Luminosità nell'infrarosso
La luminosità di NGC 3649 nell'infrarosso lontano (da 40 a 400 µm) è uguale a 5,62 x 109 (109,75 ), mentre la sua luminosità totale nell'infrarosso (da 8 a 1000 µm) è di 7,41 x 109 (109,87 ).[5]
Coppia di galassie
NGC 3649 e NGC 3646 sono ritenute formare una coppia di galassie.[6]
