NGC 3388 = NGC 3425 è una galassia lenticolare situata nella costellazione del Leone, a una distanza di circa 336 milioni di anni luce dalla nostra Via Lattea.[1]
Scoperta
La galassia è stata scoperta il 17 aprile 1784 dall'astronomo britannico di origine tedesca William Herschel ed è stata in seguito inserita nel New General Catalogue con la designazione NGC 3425. Nel 1880 la stessa galassia è stata nuovamente osservata dall'astronomo britannico Andrew Ainslie Common; la sua nuova descrizione è stata in seguito inclusa nel New General Catalogue con la designazione NGC 3388.[1]
Gruppo di NGC 3462
Secondo Abraham Mahtessian, NGC 3425 fa parte di un gruppo di 4 galassie, il Gruppo di NGC 3462. Gli altri due membri del gruppo sono NGC 3427 e NGC 3441.[4]
