NGC 3309 è una galassia ellittica situata nella costellazione dell'Idra.
Scoperta
La galassia è stata scoperta il 24 marzo 1835 dall'astronomo britannico John Herschel.[3]
Gruppo di NGC 3314B
Secondo lo studio pubblicato nel 1993 da A.M. Garcia, NGC 3309 fa parte del Gruppo di NGC 3314B. Questo gruppo comprende almeno 30 galassie, tra cui NGC 3305, NGC 3314B (PGC 33532), NGC 3316 e NGC 3336.[4]
NGC 3309 e tutte le galassie del Gruppo di NGC 3314B fanno parte dell'Ammasso dell'Idra (Abell 1060),[5] che è l'ammasso dominante del Superammasso dell'Idra-Centauro.[6]
