NGC 2940 è una lontana galassia lenticolare situata nella costellazione del Leone, a una distanza di circa 427 milioni di anni luce dalla nostra Via Lattea.[1]
Scoperta
La galassia è stata scoperta nel 1877 dall'astronomo tedesco Wilhelm Tempel.[1]
Descrizione
Secondo E.L. Turner, NGC 2939 e NGC 2940 formano una coppia di galassie.[4] Tuttavia la distanza di NGC 2940 dalla nostra Via Lattea è di 131,08 Mpc, cioè più del doppio di quella di NGC 2939, che è di 54,05 Mpc. Le due galassie formano quindi semplicemente una coppia visuale.
