NGC 2797 è una galassia a spirale situata nella costellazione del Cancro, a una distanza di circa 388 milioni di anni luce dalla nostra Via Lattea.[1]

Scoperta

La galassia è stata scoperta il 15 marzo 1866 dall'astronomo tedesco Heinrich d'Arrest.[1]

Classificazione

NASA/IPAC[2] e Wolfgang Steinicke[3] classificano NGC 2797 come una galassia peculiare, ma le immagini riprese nel corso dell'indagine SDSS mostrano chiaramente la presenza dei bracci di spirale e un accenno di formazione di una barra centrale, come indicato da Selignam.[1]

Supernova

Il 3 febbraio 2010, all'interno di NGC 2797 è stata scoperta la supernova 2010Z in modo congiunto da X. Parisky, S. B. Cenko, W. Li e A. V. Filippenko, dell'Università della California - Berkeley, nel corso del programma LOSS (Lick Observatory Supernova Search) dell'Osservatorio Lick[4] e dall'astronomo italiano Simone Leonini.[5] La supernova è stata classificata di tipo II.[5]
