La donna del tenente francese (The French Lieutenant's Woman) è un film del 1981 diretto da Karel Reisz. È il dramma in costume di un amore contrastato, tratto dal romanzo di John Fowles. La chiave di lettura del film è la trovata di proporre un film nel film, ossia le storie parallele dei due attori e dei personaggi che loro interpretano.[1]

Trama

Charles, un paleontologo, viene attratto da una donna malfamata, che dopo essere stata abbandonata da un tenente francese ha subito contraccolpi psicologici. La vicenda è ambientata nel 1867 e la protagonista, uno spirito piuttosto libero e affetta da una profonda "malinconia", o piuttosto melanchòlia, tende a infrangere le ferree convenzioni dell'era vittoriana e per questo è bersaglio di critiche feroci e soggetta ad un'emarginazione che peraltro ella stessa ricerca. I due diventano amanti, alla stessa stregua dei due attori che portano in scena la storia vittoriana, ma le due storie d'amore sono destinate ad avere una vita tormentata.
