Joseph Weizenbaum (Berlino, 8 gennaio 1923 – Gröben, 5 marzo 2008) è stato un informatico tedesco, si definì dissidente ed eretico dell'informatica^[1].

Biografia

Nato a Berlino da genitori ebrei emigrò negli Stati Uniti assieme alla propria famiglia nel 1935. Nel 1941 inizio a studiare matematica, i suoi studi furono interrotti dal suo arruolamento nel corso della seconda guerra mondiale.

Attorno al 1952 lavorò sui computer analogici e aiuto a creare il computer digitale della Wayne State University. Nel 1956 lavorò per la General Electric su ERMA un sistema di computer che vide l'introduzione delle scritte con inchiostro magnetico sugli assegni bancari, e che permise l'introduzione dell'elaborazione automatica degli stessi. Dal 1964 entrò nell'organico del MIT.

Negli anni sessanta pubblicò il programma ELIZA che simulava una conversazione con uno psicoterapeuta. Questo programma è divenuto famoso come il primo tentativo di riprodurre una conversazione naturale. Weizenbaum fu colpito dall'importanza che veniva attribuita al programma e questo lo portò a interessarsi degli aspetti filosofici legati alla creazione dell'Intelligenza artificiale.

Nel 1976 pubblicò Computer Power and Human Reason nel quale espose i suoi dubbi relativamente alla possibilità che dei computer dotati di intelligenza artificiale vengano usati per prendere delle decisioni importanti essendo gli stessi privi di compassione e saggezza. Ciò sarebbe conseguenza del fatto che tali macchine non crescerebbero in un ambiente emotivamente stimolante come una famiglia umana.

Weizenbaum fu il creatore del linguaggio di programmazione SLIP.
