La diocesi di Amatunte di Palestina (in latino Dioecesis Amathusia in Palaestina) è una sede soppressa e sede titolare della Chiesa cattolica.

Storia

Amatunte di Palestina, identificabile con le rovine di Ammata-Tell-Amta nell'odierna Giordania, è un'antica sede vescovile della provincia romana della Palestina Prima nella diocesi civile d'Oriente. Essa faceva parte del Patriarcato di Gerusalemme ed era suffraganea dell'arcidiocesi di Cesarea.[1]

Sono quattro i vescovi conosciuti di questa antica diocesi. Teodosio partecipò al cosiddetto brigantaggio efesino del 449. Sergio è menzionato nella vita di San Saba di Cirillo di Scitopoli e potrebbe essere vissuto tra la fine del V secolo e l'inizio del secolo successivo. Procopio sottoscrisse nel 518 la lettera dei vescovi di Palestina al patriarca Giovanni di Costantinopoli contro Severo di Antiochia. Doroteo firmò gli atti del sinodo del 536 convocato da Pietro di Gerusalemme e che vide riuniti i vescovi delle Tre Palestine.

Dal XVIII secolo Amatunte di Palestina è annoverata tra le sedi vescovili titolari della Chiesa cattolica; la sede è vacante dal 23 dicembre 1967. In passato la sede era menzionata come Amathensis seu Amathuntina seu Amathusia.[2]

Negli Acta Sanctae Sedis si trova la sede Amathensis, a volte indicata come suffraganea di Gerusalemme, altre invece di Scitopoli: unica però è la cronotassi dei vescovi. Solo alla fine del XIX secolo, in occasione della nomina di Bartolomeo Mirra, gli Acta Sanctae Sedis menzionano la sede di Amata come suffraganea di Apamea di Siria. Moroni parla di due sedi distinte: Amatha di Palestina, suffraganea di Gerusalemme; e Amatunta nella Palestina Seconda, suffraganea di Scitopoli. Gcatholic identifica la sede di Amata con Epifania di Siria: tuttavia la collocazione di Amata nella provincia romana di Siria è sconosciuta alle fonti ottocentesche. Agli inizi del Novecento l'Annuaire Pontifical Catholique identifica questa sede con Hama in Siria. La complessità di questa attribuzione sembra risolversi con la nomina di Valentín Comellas y Santamaría nel 1919 ed il suo trasferimento a Solsona nel 1933: vedi nota nº 9.
