Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti (6. mars 1475 – 18. febrúar 1564) var ítalskur myndhöggvari, listmálari og arkitekt sem uppi var á endurreisnartímanum. Hann var fjölhæfur listamaður, vann ótrúlegt magn stórra listaverka og skildi jafnframt eftir sig mikið af bréfum, skissum og minningaritum. Hann er sá listamaður 16. aldar sem hvað mest er vitað um. Með frægustu verkum hans eru höggmyndirnar Davíð og Pietà, freskurnar í loftinu í Sixtínsku kapellunni og hvolfþakið á Péturskirkjunni í Róm.

Æviágrip

Michelangelo fékk áhuga á list þegar hann var sex ára gamall því eiginmaður barnfóstru hans var steinsmiður. Michelangelo byrjaði að vinna sem listamaður þegar hann gerðist nemandi Domenico Ghirlandaio 13 ára að aldri. Ári síðar varð Lorenzo de' Medici allsráður í Flórens og bað Ghirlandaio um að senda sér tvo bestu nemendur sína.

Michelangelo er þekktari sem listmálari og myndhöggvari en arkitekt og ljóðskáld því málverk hans og höggmyndir þykja vera einstaklega falleg og lífleg. Hann var kaþólskur og varð trúræknari eftir því sem hann varð eldri. Þá vildi hann helst vinna einn og fékk enga ánægju af t.d. mat og drykk heldur borðaði aðeins til að halda sér á lífi.

Einkalíf

Michelangelo var líka ljóðskáld. Ljóðin sem hann orti þykja benda til þess að Michelangelo gæti hafa verið samkynhneigður. Michelangelo átti líka platónsku sambandi við skáldið og ekkjuna Victoria Colonna. Þau tjáðu ást sína að mestu í ljóðum sem þau sendu sín á milli. Michelangelo þótti vera afar auðmjúkur. Til dæmis á hann af hafa sagt við einn nemanda sinn, Ascanio Conivi, að hann hefði alltaf lifað sem fátækur maður.
