Woman Is the Future of Man (Hangul: 여자는 남자의 미래다; RR: Yeojaneun namjaui miraeda) adalah film Korea Selatan produksi tahun 2004 bergenre drama romantik yang disutradarai oleh Hong Sang-soo, yang sekaligus menulis skenarionya. Film ini tidak masuk box-office, tetapi masuk di salah satu kategori dalam perhelatan Festival Film Cannes tahun 2004[3] dan memperoleh kehormatan ditayangkan dalam berbagai festival film. Judul film ini diterjemahkan dari puisi karya Louis Aragon yang oleh sang sutradara dibaca pada sebuah kartu pos Prancis.[4]

Plot

Film ini menceritakan seputar dua kawan lama Lee Mun-ho (Yoo Ji-tae), pengajar seni di universitas, dan Kim Hyeon-gon (Kim Tae-woo), lulusan sekolah film di Amerika Serikat yang kembali ke negaranya. Ketika mereka makan malam di sebuah restauran, Kim menyusun rencana sebuah pertemuan antara mereka dan mantan pacar Kim, Park Seon-hwa(Sung Hyun-ah). Tanpa sepengetahuan Kim, sayangnya, Lee mulai menjalin hubungan dengan Seon-hwa, setelah kepergian Kim kembali ke Amerika Serikat. Mereka bertiga berkumpul kembali dalam sebuah malam untuk minum-minum. Dan akhirnya, dua pria itu meninggalkan Park Seon-hwa seperti tahun sebelumnya.

Produksi

Pembiayaan produksi film Woman Is the Future of Man ditanggung oleh perusahaan film Korea Selatan UniKorea dan Miracin Korea, dan perusahaan seorang produser Prancis, Marin Karmitz yaitu MK2.[5][6] Film ini menelan biaya sebesar US$1.3 juta.[5] Film ini tercatat sebagai film fitur panjang ke-tujuh yang disutradarai oleh Hong Sang-soo, yang juga menulis skenarionya.

Film ini dirilis di Korea Selatan pada tanggal 5 Mei 2004, namun kurang menuai kesuksesan, dengan total penonton hanya mencapai 284,872 dan menempati peringkat 46th dari 75.[7]

Woman Is the Future of Man ditayangkan bersamaan dengan pemutaran film Korea Selatan lainnya, Oldboy, dalam perhelatan Festival Film Cannes 2004.[3] marking the first time that two films from the country were in the competition simultaneously.[8] Yoo Ji-tae bermain di kedua film tersebut; dia bermain untuk peran antagonis di Oldboy. Sayangnya Oldboy, Woman Is the Future of Man tidak memenangi penghargaan karena miskinnya antusiasme penonton terhadap film ini.[4] Film ini merupakan film ke-tiga yang dikerjakan oleh sutradara Hong Sang-soo yang diikutkan di perhelatan Cannes, setelah The Power of Kangwon Province (1998) dan Virgin Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors (2000), dan film pertama yang masuk kategori dalam kompetisi tersebut.[4] In 2005 Hong's next film, Tale of Cinema, also competed in Cannes. Woman Is the Future of Man juga diputar di acara Melbourne International Film Festival, the Vancouver International Film Festival, the New York Film Festival, the London Film Festival dan the Pusan International Film Festival.[5][9][9][10][11][12]
