The Ballad of Narayama (楢山節考, Narayama bushikō) adalah film Jepang produksi tahun 1983 yang disutradarai oleh Shōhei Imamura, berdasarkan skenario yang ditulis oleh Shichirō Fukazawa (ide cerita) dan Shōhei Imamura, diadaptasi dari buku Narayama bushikō karya Shichirō Fukazawa dan terinspirasi oleh film The Ballad of Narayama yang disutradarai oleh Keisuke Kinoshita.[1] Film ini memenangi penghargaan Palme d'Or dalam Festival Film Cannes tahun 1983.[2]

Plot

Film ini berlatar belakang sebuah desa kecil di Jepang pada abad ke-19. Menurut tradisi setempat, seseorang yang sudah mencapai usia tujuh puluh tahun, dia harus menempuh perjalanan ke gunung terpencil untuk menyiapkan kematian, sebuah praktik yang dikenal dengan sebutan ubasute. Alkisah, Orin, berusia 69 tahun dan terlihat sehat, tapi mencatat bahwa seorang tetangga harus menyeret ayahnya ke gunung, jadi dia memutuskan menghalangi untuk mendekati agar terbebas dari hukumannya. Dia menghabiskan satu tahun mengatur semua urusan keluarga dan desanya: dia menghukum berat keluarga yang menimbun makanan, dan membantu anaknya yang lebih muda kehilangan keperjakaannya.

Film ini memiliki beberapa adegan keras yang menunjukkan bagaimana brutal kondisi dialami oleh penduduk desa. Diselingi antara episode di film ini merupakan sketsa singkat alam - perburuan burung, ular, dan binatang lainnya, menonton, bernyanyi, bersanggama atau melahirkan.
