Sekolah pendidikan guru

Sekolah pendidikan guru (disingkat SPG), juga disebut sebagai sekolah normal (serapan dari bahasa Prancis: école normale), adalah sekolah yang melatih para lulusan sekolah menengah atas untuk menjadi guru. Di Indonesia, sekolah ini pernah ada pada masa Orde Baru, tetapi sejak masa reformasi, sebagian besar dari sekolah semacam ini sekarang masuk ke dalam perguruan tinggi keguruan.[1]

Tahun 1685, St. Jean-Baptiste de La Salle, dari Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, Mendirikan apa yang umumnya dianggap sebagai sekolah normal pertama, École Normale, di Reims, Champagne, Prancis. Istilah "normal" dalam konteks ini merujuk kepada "pengajaran" norma atau model; tidak mengacu pada norma sosial yang dibedakan dari penyimpangan (konotasi modern tentang "normal" dalam konteks masyarakat).

Menurut Oxford English Dictionary, sekolah normal di Amerika Serikat dan Kanada melatih guru-guru dari sekolah dasar, sementara itu di Eropa mendidik guru-guru untuk sekolah dasar, menengah, dan sekolah tersier.[2]

Sekolah normal pertama di Amerika Serikat didirikan di Concord, Vermont, oleh Samuel Read Hall tahun 1823 untuk melatih guru-guru. Pada tahun 1839, sekolah normal lainnya didirikan di Massachusetts; yang kemudian berkembang menjadi Framingham State University. Beberapa perguruan tinggi negeri terkenal seperti University of California, Los Angeles, didirikan sebagai sekolah normal. Di Kanada, institusi semacam itu biasanya berasimilasi oleh universitas sebagai Fakultas Pendidikan terakhir, yang menawarkan gelar Bachelor of Education satu atau dua tahun.[3]

Institut Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan, disingkat IKIP, adalah perguruan tinggi di Indonesia yang menyelenggarakan pendidikan akademik khususnya dalam disiplin ilmu pendidikan. Saat ini, banyak IKIP yang telah berkembang menjadi universitas yang menyediakan program studi di luar pendidikan. Meskpiun begitu, universitas-universitas ini lebih banyak menawarkan program studi pendidikan yang bervariasi dan jarang ditemukan di luar universitas eks-IKIP. Universitas-universitas tersebut diantaranya:

dan beberapa universitas lainnya. Umumnya universitas eks-IKIP negeri memiliki nama "Universitas Negeri (nama daerah)".
