Referendum konstitusional Republik Batavia 1797

Referendum konstitusional Republik Batavia 1797 diadakan pada tanggal 8 Agustus 1797. Hasilnya para pemilih menolak rumusan konstitusi baru Republik Batavia. Hasil referendum ini kemudian memicu peristiwa kudeta.

Latar belakang

Pada tahun 1789-an, terjadi Revolusi Batavia yang dikobarkan oleh kelompok Patriot melawan kelompok Orangis yang mendukung raja. Kelompok Patriot dibantu oleh tentara Prancis dan pada akhirnya berhasil mengusir stadtholder Willem V pada akhir tahun 1794. Beberapa minggu kemudian, pada tanggal 19 Januari 1795, Republik Batavia diproklamirkan.

Majelis Nasional Republik Batavia kemudian melakukan diskusi selama dua tahun. Pada tanggal 10 Mei 1797, rancangan terakhir konstitusi baru telah dirumuskan. Konstitusi ini merupakan hasil kompromi antara mereka yang merasa bahwa wilayah-wilayah di Republik harus tetap memiliki otonomi seperti sebelumnya, dan mereka yang merasa bahwa republik ini sebaiknya menjadi negara kesatuan.[1]

Hasil

Rancangan konstitusi ini ditentang oleh hampir delapan puluh persen pemilih, sehingga konstitusi baru harus dirumuskan. Namun, dengan bantuan dari Prancis, kelompok unitaris radikal melancarkan kudeta pada Januari 1798. Konstitusi baru yang mendirikan republik kesatuan lalu ditetapkan oleh Majelis Nasional, dan konstitusi ini lalu disetujui dalam referendum tanggal 23 April 1798.
