Padmavat (atau Padmawat) adalah sebuah wiracarita yang ditulis pada tahun 1540 oleh seorang penyair Sufi, Malik Muhammad Jayasi.[2] Ia menulis wiracarita ini dalam bahasa Awadh[3][4] dan pada awalnya dengan menggunakan aksara Nastaʿlīq Persia.[5] Wiracarita ini merupakan teks dalam bahasa Awadh tertua yang masih ada hingga kini.[6] Wiracarita ini mengisahkan keinginan Sultan Delhi Alauddin Khalji untuk menikahi Rani Padmini.[7] Rani Padmini adalah seorang permaisuri dari Kerajaan Sinala dan merupakan sahabat karib burung beo yang dapat bicara, Hiraman. Ayahnya tidak menyukai hubungan ini dan memerintahkan agar burung itu dibunuh. Burung ini lari dan lalu ditangkap oleh pemburu, dan akhirnya menjadi hewan peliharaan penguasa Chittor, Ratansen.[8] Ia merasa terdorong dengan perkataan beo itu mengenai kecantikan Padmini dan ia memutuskan untuk mengunjungi Kerajaan Sinhala. Setelah melalui petualangan (termasuk menyeberangi tujuh lautan), ia akhirnya menikah dengan Padmini, tetapi Alauddin Khalji juga mendengar kabar mengenai kecantikan Padmini.[9] Alauddin lalu mengepung Chittor untuk merampas Padmini. Pada akhirnya pasukan Alauddin Khalji berhasil mengalahkan pasukan Ratansen, dan Ratansen sendiri tewas dalam pertarungan melawan Devpal, seorang raja dari Kumbhalner yang juga terpana dengan kecantikan Padmini. Sementara itu, Padmini melakukan ritual jauhar (bakar diri) untuk mempertahankan kehormatannya.[10]

Alauddin Khalji dan suami Padmini, Ratan Sen, adalah tokoh dalam sejarah, sementara Padmini merupakan tokoh legenda.[11]
