Sejarah

Masjid merupakan elemen yang tidak dapat dipisahkan dengan Pondok Pesantren, bahkan dianggap sebagai tempat ummat Islam mengadakan berbagai macam kegiatan keagamaan, sebagaimana praktek sholat berjama’ah dan lain sebagainya. Oleh sebab itu, bukan merupakan hal yang aneh jika dimana ada Pesantren disitu pula ada masjid.

Asal mula berdirinya Masjid Agung Lawang Songo Pondok Lirboyo karena Pondok Pesantren yang sudah berwujud nyata itu kian hari semakin banyak santri yang berdatangan, sehingga dirasakan oleh Simbah KH. Sholeh Banjarmelati selaku mertua yang sangat perhatian kepada KH. Abdul Karim menganggap belum sempurna kalau belum ada masjidnya.

Maka dua setengah tahun setelah berdirinya Pondok Pesantren Lirboyo, tepatnya pada tahun 1913 M. timbullah gagasan dari Simbah KH. Sholeh Banjarmelati untuk merintis mendirikan masjid di sekitar Pondok.

Semula masjid itu amat sederhana sekali, tidak lebih dari dinding dan atap yang terbuat dari kayu. Namun setelah beberapa lama digunakan, lambat laun bangunan itu mengalami kerapuhan. Bahkan suatu ketika bangunan itu hancur porak poranda ditiup angin beliung dengan kencang.

Akhirnya KH. Muhammad, kakak ipar KH. Abdul Karim, mempunyai inisiatif untuk membangun kembali masjid yang telah rusak itu dengan bangunan yang lebih permanen. Jalan keluar yang ditempuh KH. Muhammad adalah menemui KH. Abdul Karim guna meminta pertimbangan dan bermusyawarah.

Tidak lama kemudian KH. Abdul Karim mengutus KH. Ya’qub, adik iparnya untuk sowan berkonsultasi dengan KH. Ma’ruf Kedunglo mengenai langkah selanjutnya yang harus ditempuh dalam pelaksanaan pembangunan masjid tersebut.

Dari pertemuan antara KH. Ya’qub dengan KH. Ma’ruf Kedunglo itu membuahkan persetujuan, yaitu dana pembangunan masjid dimintakan dari sumbangan para dermawan dan hartawan. Usai pembangunan itu selesai, peresmian dilakukan pada tanggal 15 Rabi’ul Awwal 1347 H. / 1928 M. Acara itu bertepatan juga dengan acara ngunduh mantu putri KH. Abdul Karim yang kedua, Nyai Salamah dengan KH. Manshur Paculgowang.

Dalam tempo penggarapan yang tidak terlalu lama, masjid itu sudah berdiri tegak dan megah dengan mustakanya yang menjulang tinggi. dinding serta lantainya yang terbuat dari batu merah, gaya bangunannya yang bergaya klasik dan merupakan penggabungan gaya arsitektur Jawa kuno dengan gaya arsitektur Negara Timur Tengah.

Untuk mengenang kembali masa keemasan Islam pada abad pertengahan, maka atas prakarsa KH. Ma’ruf Kedunglo, pintu yang semula hanya satu, ditambah lagi menjadi sembilan, mirip kejayaan daulat Fatimiyyah.
