Aaron Burr

Konspirasi Aaron Burr diduga adalah pengkhianatan komplotan pekebun, politisi, dan perwira angkatan darat pada awal abad ke-19. Dugaan komplotan ini dipimpin oleh Aaron Burr, mantan Wakil Presiden Amerika Serikat (1801-1805). Tujuannya adalah untuk menciptakan sebuah negara merdeka di tengah Amerika Utara termasuk Amerika Serikat Barat daya dan bagian Meksiko. Burr berdalih bahwa ia bermaksud untuk bertani 40.000 hektar (160 km2) di Wilayah Texas yang disewakan kepadanya oleh Mahkota Spanyol.

Presiden Thomas Jefferson memerintahkan Burr untuk ditangkap dan didakwa atas pengkhianatan, meskipun kurangnya bukti yang kuat. Niat sebenarnya Aaron Burr tetap tidak jelas bagi sejarawan, beberapa di antaranya mengklaim bahwa ia bermaksud untuk mengambil bagian Texas dan Louisiana untuk dirinya sendiri. Dia dibebaskan dari tuduhan makar, tapi persidangan menghancurkan karier politiknya yang sudah goyah.
