Kematian Ivan Ilyich

Kematian Ivan Ilyich adalah sebuah novela karangan Leo Tolstoy yang pertama kali diterbitkan pada tahun 1886.[1] Novela klasik ini menceritakan kehidupan dan kematian seorang birokrat bernama Ivan Ilyich yang menderita penyakit mematikan.[2]

Sinopsis

Novela ini dibuka dengan peristiwa pengumuman kematian Ivan kepada keluarga dan koleganya, yang dilanjutkan dengan penguburan jasad Ivan. Bagian selanjutnya dari novela ini menggunakan alur sorot balik ke kehidupan Ivan di masa mudanya. Ivan, yang berkarir di bidang hukum, menikah dengan Praskovya Fyodorovna dan memiliki seorang anak.[3] Dengan sikap yang dingin, ia mengambil jarak dari keluarganya dan pekerjaannya. Seiring berjalannya waktu, Ivan jatuh sakit. Seorang pelayan bernama Gerasim menjadi orang yang menemani dan memahami gejolak yang dirasakan Ivan. Selama sakit hingga meninggal, Ivan meratapi makna kehidupan yang ia jalani.
