John Howard Northrop (5 Juli 1891 – 27 Mei 1987) ialah seorang biokimiawan Amerika Serikat yang memenangkan Nobel Kimia pada tahun 1946 (bersama James Sumner dan Wendell Stanley) untuk pemurnian dan pengkristalan enzim tertentu.

Biografi

Northrop lahir di Yonkers, New York. Ayahnya, zoolog terlatih, tewas dalam sebuah ledakan di laboratorium 2 minggu sebelum John lahir. John dididik di Columbia University, di mana ia menerima gelar PhD dalam kimia pada tahun 1915. Selama Perang Dunia I, ia mengadakan penelitian untuk U.S. Army Chemical Warfare Service tentang produksi aseton dan etanol melalui fermentasi. Karya ini menimbulkan pada studi enzim.

Pada tahun 1929, ai mengisolasi dan mengkristalkan enzim lambung pepsin dan menemukan bahwa enzim ini adalah protein dan pada tahun 1938 ia melakukan hal yang sama pada bacteriofag pertama (virus kecil yang menyerang bakteri), dan mengetahui bahwa ini adalah nukleoprotein. Northrop juga berbuat demikian pada pepsinogen (prekursor pepsin), tripsin, kimotripsin, dan karboksipeptidase.

Bukunya Crystalline Enzymes, yang terbit pada tahun 1939, adalah teks penting. Northrop bekerja di Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, New York City antara tahun 1916-1961, ketika ia pensiun.

Puterinya Alice menikah dengan Frederick Chapman Robbins, yang dianugerahi Nobel Fisiologi atau Kedokteran pada tahun 1954. John Howard Northrop meninggal pada tanggal 27 Mei 1987 di Wickenburg, Arizona.
