Persebaran gelada

Gelada (Theropithecus gelada, bahasa Amhara: ጭላዳ?) adalah spesies monyet yang hanya dapat ditemui di Dataran Tinggi Etiopia dengan populasi yang besar di Pegunungan Simien. Gelada sebenarnya bukanlah babun (babun adalah anggota genus Papio), tetapi merupakan satu-satunya anggota genus Theropithecus yang masih ada.[3][4] Seperti kerabat babunnya, monyet ini tinggal di darat dan mencari makan di padang rumput.[5][6]

Gelada adalah satu-satunya primata yang utamanya bersifat graminivor; dedaunan rumput mencakup 90% makanan mereka. Mereka dapat memakan daun maupun biji rumput. Jika keduanya tersedia, gelada lebih memilih biji. Mereka juga dapat memakan bunga, rizom, dan akar jika tersedia.[6][7]

Subspesies

Terdapat dua subspesies gelada, yaitu:[2]

  • Gelada utara, Theropithecus gelada gelada
  • Gelada timur, gelada selatan atau gelada heuglin, Theropithecus gelada obscurus
