Diferensial (otomotif)

Diferensial dalam bahasa Inggris differential gear, yaitu suatu peranti yang berfungsi memberikan perbedaan putaran (yang berlainan) antara kedua roda, dalam hal ini roda belakang.[1]

Diferensial ini terdiri atas susunan roda roda gigi yang berbentuk kerucut (bevel drive pinion). Roda-roda gigi khusus yang berbentuk roda gigi kerucut ini disebut juga cardan atau di Indonesia lebih dikenal dengan sebutan gardan. Pada umumnya konstruksi dasar dari diferensial adalah dua roda yang masing-masing ujung poros dipasang dengan sebuah roda gigi kerucut. Kedua roda gigi kerucut ini disebut roda gigi samping (side gear), yang selanjutnya dihubungkan dengan dua roda gigi kerucut lain yang berukuran lebih kecil yang disebut roda gigi diferensial atau differential pinion sehingga keempat roda gigi tersebut saling berkaitan.

Apabila kedua poros tersebut diputar dengan kecepatan putaran yang sama, maka roda-roda gigi diferensial akan ikut terbawa bergerak bersama roda-roda gigi samping, tetapi tak akan berputar pada porosnya. Akan tetapi kalau salah satu dari kedua poros tersebut diputar dengan kecepatan putaran yang berbeda, yaitu sedikit lambat atau bahkan diam sama sekali, maka akan mengakibatkan roda gigi tersebut tidak sekadar akan bergerak mengelilingi poros roda melainkan juga akan berputar terhadap sumbunya. Roda-roda gigi diferensial ditempatkan di dalam sebuah kotak kecil yang berhubungan dengan sebuah roda gigi kerucut besar yang dapat diputar bebas pada salah satu poros roda (umumnya sebelah kiri) yang disebut roda gigi mahkota (crown wheel) atau disebut juga roda gigi cincin. Roda gigi mahkota ini kemudian dihubungkan dengan roda gigi pinion yang dipasang pada roda gigi poros gardan.

Dengan demikian poros roda gigi gardan dapat memutar roda roda belakang menurut putaran yang dapat disesuaikan dengan kondisi jalanan. Jadi apabila mobil berjalan lurus, roda roda gigi diferensial tidak akan berputar pada porosnya, sehingga roda belakang mobil yang terletak di sebelah luar dapat berputar lebih cepat.

Adapun perbedaan kecepatan putaran roda-roda ini akan lebih besar apabila jalanan mempunyai tikungan yang lebih tajam. Jadi hal ini sangat bergantung pada kondisi belokan atau tikungan pada jalanan yang bersangkutan.

Pinion drive gear berfungsi untuk meneruskan putaran dari poros propeler ke gardan

Ring gear berfungsi untuk mengubah sudut putaran menjadi 90 derajat

Differential case berfungsi sebagai rumah dari pinion gear

Axle shaft housing berfungsi sebagai rumah gardan dan tempat oli gardan
