Auriga Leader

Auriga Leader adalah kapal car carrier, pengangkut mobil, yang dimiliki oleh Nippon Yusen Kaisha, dan digunakan untuk distribusi mesin penggerak dan mobil di seluruh dunia; misalnya kendaraan Mitsubishi dari Jepang ke seluruh dunia. Sejumlah kecil daya kapal dihasilkan oleh panel fotovoltaik.[1]Kapal ini bobotnya 18.758 metrik ton, panjangnya 199,99 m (656,1 kaki) dengan kapasitas 6.200 mobil. Selesai dibangun pada tahun 2008.

Nippon Yusen Kaisha dan Nippon Oil mengembangkan Auriga Leader sebagian sebagai kapal eksperimental, di mana ia seharusnya mengumpulkan penelitian statistik tentang bagaimana tenaga surya dapat membantu memberi daya pada kapal di laut. Tahap percobaan kapal direncanakan selama dua tahun.

Panel surya menghasilkan energi 1,4 kali lebih banyak di kapal di laut daripada di darat di Tokyo. Tidak diketahui faktor apa yang berdampak pada hal ini, tetapi disarankan bahwa berada di laut berarti lebih banyak sinar matahari dan angin yang bertiup mendinginkan panel dan dengan demikian meningkatkan efisiensi.

Kemampuan tenaga surya Auriga Leader menghasilkan 0,05% dari tenaga penggerak kapal dan 1% dari penggunaan listrik nya. Hal ini akan memberikan kontribusi untuk menurunkan penggunaan bahan bakar kapal.
