Asyur bin Sem

Asyur (Ashur; bahasa Ibrani: אַשּׁוּר‎) adalah anak kedua dari Sem, putra Nuh. Asyur mempunyai saudara-saudara Elam, Arpakhsad, Lud, dan Aram.

Nama "Asyur bin Sem" disebutkan dalam daftar keturunan Nuh pada Alkitab Kristen yaitu:

Keturunan Sem ialah Elam, Asyur, Arpakhsad, Lud dan Aram.[2]
Keturunan Sem ialah Elam, Asyur, Arpakhsad, Lud, Aram, Us, Hul, Geter dan Mesekh.[3]

Identifikasi

Sebelum penemuan Naskah Laut Mati, ada pertentangan di kalangan akademisi mengenai apakah Asyur (Ashur) atau Nimrod membangun kota-kota Asyur: Niniwe, Resen, Rehoboth-Ir dan Kalah, karena nama Ashur dapat merujuk kepada orang maupun negara (bandingkan Kejadian 10:8–12 bahasa Inggris AV dan ESV).[4] Sir Walter Raleigh menyedikan beberapa halaman dalam History of the World (Sejarah Dunia;  ~ 1616) untuk mengutip catatan akademis mengenai pertanyaan apakah Nimrod atau Asyur yang membangun kota-kota di Asyur.[5] Versi ge'ez  Kitab Yobel, didukung oleh 15 gulungan Kitab Yobel yang ditemukan di antara Naskah Laut Mati, menegaskan bahwa tanah yang diperebutkan dalam Kejadian 10:8-12 dibagi ke Asyur.[6] Yobel 9:3 menyatakan,

"Dan untuk Asyur muncul Bagian Kedua, semua tanah Asyur dan Niniwe dan Sinear dan sampai perbatasan India, dan itu naik dan menyusuri sungai."[7]

Dalam terjemahan Alkitab Ibrani ke bahasa Yunani, Septuaginta, maupun Alkitab Jenewa, dan versi-versi Alkitab Raja James 1611 dan New King James Version, lebih lanjut menegaskan bahwa bahasa teks menunjukkan Asyur sebagai pendiri kota Niniwe, Rehoboth, Kalah, dan Resen.[8][9][10][11] Sejarawan Yahudi-Romawi abad ke-1 Flavius Yosefus juga memberikan pernyataan berikut:

"Asyur tinggal di kota Niniwe; dan menamai rakyatnya Asyur, yang menjadi bangsa paling beruntung, melampaui yang lain" (Antiquitates, i, vi, 4).

Flavius Yosefus menyebutkan Asyur tinggal di Niniwe akan membuat tidak mungkin bagi Nimrod untuk membangun kota ini, karena Asyur adalah seorang yang berderajat lebih tua daripada Nimrod.

Asyur, bapak Tekoa

Ada pula Asyur, bapa Tekoa, disebutkan dalam 1 Tawarikh 4 sebagai salah satu keturunan Yehuda.[12]

Istri

Helah adalah istri pertama dari Asyur dan Naarah adalah istri keduanya. Nama "na'arah" berarti "gadis" atau "maiden" dalam bahasa Ibrani. Naarah adalah dari suku Yehuda dan melahirkan Ahuzam, Hepher, Temeni, dan Haahashtari (1 Taw. 4:5, 6).
