תה ארל גריי (באנגלית: Earl Grey tea) הוא תערובת תה שחור המבושמת בשמן אתרי הממוצה מקליפת ברגמוט. תערובת תה פופולרית זו נקראת על שם צ'ארלס גריי, רוזן גריי השני שהיה ראש ממשלת בריטניה. המילה "ארל" (רוזן) היא תואר האצולה של גריי.

על פי המסופר, קיבל הרוזן גריי במתנה מדיפלומט כלשהו תה בטעם שמן ברגמוט. תפוז ברגמוט הוא פרי הדר ריחני, המשמש יותר לבישום מאכלים אחרים מאשר למאכל כמות שהיא. האגדה כוללת בדרך כלל פקיד סיני אסיר תודה, אך תערובת תה זו נעשתה לראשונה מתה הודי שחור ותה ציילוני. עם השנים תערובות שונות שימשו להכנת תה ארל גריי.

התה התגלה כאיכותי עד כדי כך שצ'ארלס גריי, רוזן גריי השני ביקש מחברת המסחר לתה "טוויינינגס" ליצור תערובת תה שדומה לזו שקיבל. חברת "טוויינינגס" מכרה את "תה ארל גריי" הראשון בשוק הבריטי - וקראה לו על שמו של הארל מגריי. הארל גריי שלהם הוא תערובת של תה סיני, תה דרג'ילינג הודי, תה ציילוני ואפילו קמצוץ של לפסנג סושונג.

חברת "טוויינינגס" מייצרת תה דומה בשם "ליידי גריי" שמכיל תפוזים מסביליה, לימון וברגמוט.

תה ארל גריי היה התה האהוב על דאגלס אדמס, מחבר סדרת ספרי מדריך הטרמפיסט לגלקסיה.

התה הוא המשקה האהוב על דמותו הבדיונית של קפטן ז'אן לוק פיקארד מסדרת הטלוויזיה "מסע בין כוכבים: הדור הבא", שפנייתו למשכפל המזון "Tea, Earl Grey, hot" (תה, ארל גריי, חם) הפכה לאמרת כנף מפורסמת המזוהה עם דמותו.[1]

יתרונות בריאותיים וסיכונים

בדומה לתה שחור אחר, הפוליפנולים והקפאין שמכיל תה ארל גריי נחשבים כבעלי יתרונות למניעת מחלות קרדיווסקולריות, בעיות עיכול ומניעת סרטן, אך המחקרים בתחומים אלה עדיין אינם חד-משמעיים.

שמן הברגמוט עשוי לספק יתרונות בריאותיים כמו גם סיכונים בריאותיים. כמה מחקרים גילו כי השמן עשוי להוריד את רמות הכולסטרול ויש לו כמה תכונות של משככי כאבים.

מצד שני, לברגמוט יש סיכונים בריאותיים. סיכונים אלה יכולים לכלול מגוון של בעיות עור.

צריכה מופרזת של תה ברגמוט עלולה לגרום לבעיות בספיגת האשלגן. ירידה ברמת האשלגן בגוף עלולה לגרום להתכווצות שרירים.  

שימוש כנותן טעם

ארל גריי משמש כנותן טעם בעוגות ובממתקים.[2][3] למשל חברת נסטלה ייצרה ממתק שוקולד מסדרת קיטקאט בטעם ארל גריי (שווק ביפן בלבד). ליצירת רטבים משתמשים בדרך כלל בתמצית שמכינים משקיות התה. לשימוש במיני מתיקה משרים את העלים בחמאה מותכת ולאחר שהטעם נספג מסננים את העלים.[4][5]
