סמן (אקלים)

בפלאוקלימטולוגיה, סמן (באנגלית: Proxy) הוא מאפיין אקלים פיזיקלי שהשתמר לאורך תקופה ממושכת, שניתן להתחקות אחר אופני השינוי בו לאורך תקופה, וזאת באמצעות אמצעי מדידה מטאורולוגיים.[1] סמנים מאשרים למדענים להתחקות אחר תנאי אקלים ששררו על פני תקופה ממושכת של תולדות כדור הארץ. תיעוד אקלים אמין בממדים עולמיים החל רק בשנות ה-1880, וסמנים הם האמצעים היחידים העומדים לרשות מדענים על מנת להתחקות אחר דפוסי אקלים שהתקיימו לפני שהחל התיעוד הישיר של נתוני אקלים.

דוגמאות של סמנים כוללות ליבות קרח, תיארוך באמצעות טבעות עצים, פלינולוגיה, קידוחים (אנ'), אלמוגים, משקעים והתחקות אחר עקבות פחמן בתצורות סלעי מערה. אופי הגריעה או שיעור הגדילה וההצטברות של חומרי הסמן מושפעים מתנאי האקלים שהתקיימו בעת היווצרותם של החומרים או גדילתם. סמנים יכולים לאפשר התחקות אחר שרידים כימיים שנוצרו על ידי שינויי אקלים, כגון כמויות של איזוטופים מסוימים.

סמנים מסוימים, כגון בועות גז שנלכדו בקרח, מאפשרות לגלות שרידים לאטמוספירות קדומות ולמדוד שרידים אלה באופן ישיר, וכך לספק היסטוריה של התנודות העונתיות והרב-שנתיות באטמוספירה של כדור הארץ.[2] כדי לספק תוצאות מדויקות יותר, לוודא את דיוק הקריאה ואימות הנתונים ההיסטוריים, מתבצע תהליך מתמשך של השוואת נתונים צולבת בין מספר סמנים שונים.[3]

חוקרים משתמשים בסמנים כדי להבנות מסדי נתונים לגבי טמפרטורות, מסדי נתונים שמשתרעים על תקופה ממושכת ומוקדמת יותר ממסדי הנתונים המסורתיים, המתבססים על תיעוד טמפרטורה ישיר. כך מאפשרים הסמנים דיון מושכל יותר בסוגיית ההתחממות העולמית. אופי הפיזור של תיעוד הסמנים אינו אחיד, ובחצי הכדור הצפוני יש תיעוד רב יותר.[4]
