ב-1 במאי 2010 בוצע ניסיון פיגוע טרור בכיכר טיימס במנהטן שבניו יורק. שני רוכלים הודיעו למשטרת ניו יורק שהם הבחינו בעשן שיוצא מכלי רכב, ובזכות ערנותם התגלתה מכונית התופת.[1][2] הפצצה במכונית הופעלה אך היא לא התפוצצה, ועל כן כוחות הביטחון במקום הצליחו לנטרלה לפני שגרמה לנפגעים.[1][3][4] יומיים לאחר מכן עצרו סוכנים פדרליים את פייסל שחאד בן ה-30, יליד פקיסטן, אשר התגורר בברידג'פורט שבקונטיקט, והפך לאזרח אמריקאי באפריל 2009.[5] שחאד נעצר לאחר שעלה על טיסה לדובאי בנמל התעופה ג'ון פ. קנדי שבניו יורק.[5][6][7][8][9] שחאד הודה בניסיון הפיגוע ברכב, וציין שהוא התאמן לבצע פיגועים במחנה מיוחד בפקיסטן.[10]

התובע הכללי של ארצות הברית אריק הולדר ציין שכוונתו של שחאד הייתה "להרוג אמריקאים".[5] נגד שחאד הוגש כתב אישום בבית משפט פדרלי במנהטן ב-4 במאי בגין ניסיון להשתמש בנשק להשמדה המונית, ועל פשעים פדרליים אחרים הקשורים לחומרי נפץ.[5] יותר מתריסר אנשים נעצרו בפקיסטן על מעורבותם בפיגוע. הולדר ציין שארגון הטליבאן בפקיסטן סייע בהוצאה לפועל של הפיגוע ואולי אף מימן אותו.[11]

מכוניתו של החשוד, מכונית ניסן פאתפינדר בצבע כחול כהה, נכנסה לכיכר טיימס בסביבות 6:28 בערב במוצאי שבת ה-1 במאי 2010, כפי שניתן היה לראות במצלמות אבטחה.

שתי דקות לאחר מכן, שני רוכלים אמריקנים, מוכר חולצת הטריקו לאנס אורטון בן ה-56, ומוכר תיקי היד דוויין ג'קסון בן ה-58,[15] הבחינו בעשן שיוצא מפתחי האוורור של המכונית ליד המושב האחורי של הרכב אשר חנה על אף שהמנוע פעל והאורות שלו פעלו.[16][17] הרוכלים שמעו גם שזיקוקי הדינור בתוך המכונית החלו להתפוצץ בפנים.[17]

בינתיים המהגר הסנגלי אליון ניאסה אשר מוכר תצלומים בכיכר היה מבין אלה שהבחינו ברכב והזעיקו שוטר רכוב.[18] הרכב חנה ברחוב עמוס תיירים בפינה המזרחית של אסטור פלאזה (צומת מפגש הרחובות רחוב 45 מערב ורחוב ברודוויי), ליד הכניסה לתיאטרון מינסקוף בו הוצג באותה העת המחזמר הפופולרי "מלך האריות".[19][20][21][22][23] שוטר ניגש אל המכונית והבחין בעשן שיוצא מהמכונית, במיכלים שבפנים, ובריח אבק השריפה.[17] השוטר קרא מיד לגיבוי, לצוות סילוק פצצות, ולמחלקת הכבאים.[24]

המשטרה פינתה במהירות את כל הרכבים והולכי הרגל מרחוב 43 לרחוב 49 בשדרה השביעית, וברחוב 45 מהשדרה השביעית ועד השדרה השמינית, כולל את כל מי שצפה במופעים בברודוויי. המשטרה פינתה גם את כל מי שהיה במספר מבנים בקרבת הרכב, כולל את כל מי ששהה במלון "מריוט".[25]

הרכב החל לעלות באש אך הוא לא התפוצץ.[22] עם הגעתו של צוות סילוק הפצצות הם השתמשו במכשיר רובוטי המופעל בשלט רחוק על למנת לפרוץ לרכב דרך החלון ולחקור את תוכנו של הרכב.

צוות סילוק הפצצות מצא בעקבות כן את הדברים הבאים בחלק האחורי של הרכב:

  • שני שעונים מעוררים עם סוללות, אשר ככל הנראה שימשו כמכשירים הפעלה למטען הנפץ
  • שתי פחיות אדומות עם בנזין
  • מעל ל-40 זיקוקי דינור מסוג M-88 בתוך מיכל מתכת (עטוף בסרט דביק)
  • אבק שרפה
  • שלושה מיכלי 20 ליטר של פרופאן
  • לוקר לאקדחים ירוק ממתכת שהכיל:
  • סיר לחץ ממתכת המכיל סבך של חוטים אשר היו מחוברים גם כן לשעון המעורר
  • 110 ק"ג דשן ב-8 שקיות ניילון
  • 120 זיקוקי דינור מסוג M-88[17][22][26][27][28][29]

הסברה של החוקרים הייתה שמכונית התופת הייתה מורכבת מארבעה מרכיבים נפרדים - אשר בפועל היו ארבע פצצות שמהוות פצצה אחת גדולה.[30] הזיקוקים היו אמורים להתחיל את התהליך על ידי כך שהם מפעילים את כל ארבע הפצצות שמחוברות לפחיות עם הבנזין.[30] הדבר היה אמור ליצור פיצוץ, אשר בעקבות כך היו אמור לגרום לפרופאן והדשן להתפוצץ. טלפון סלולרי ושעון יד שנמצאו ברכב נועדו כנראה גם לשמש כמכשירי הפעלה נפרדים לפצצה ברכב. האדם שהרכיב את הפצצה הניח באופן שגוי שהדשן ותערובת הסוכר יעבדו באותו כמו שהדשן שהיה מבוסס על האמוניום החנקתי עבד בפיגוע באוקלהומה סיטי.[30]
