נחשול קרח

נחשול קרח (באנגלית: ice shove, ice surge, ice heave, ivu,[1] או shoreline ice pileup) הוא שמה של תופעה בה נדחף קרח בחזקה מהאוקיינוס או אגם גדול ועולה על החוף[2].

נחשול קרח עלול להיווצר על ידי זרמי אוקיינוס, רוחות חזקות, או הבדלי טמפרטורה, אשר גורמים להפעלת כח אדיר המסוגל לערום קרח ולדוחפו מעל החוף ועמוק לתוך היבשה[3], תוך יצירת ערימות גבוהות של קרח, היכולות להגיע ל-12 מטרים גובה. יש המכנים את התופעה כ"צונאמי של קרח" ("ice tsunami")[4], אולם בפועל אין קשר וההתנהגות היא כהתנהגות "רגילה" של קרחון[5]. עדים תיארו את הרעש של נחשול קרח כשל משאית או כרעם[2][6][7][4].

נחשולי קרח יכולים לגרום נזק רב למבנים וצומח הנמצאים בקרבת גוף המים[2][4][6][7][8].
