המרכז לאמנות יהודית הוא מכון מחקר באוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים, שמטרתו לתעד ולחקור את התרבות החזותית היהודית. המרכז הוקם בשנת 1979. הארכיונים והאוספים של המרכז מהווים את מאגר המידע הגדול והמקיף ביותר בתחום האמנות היהודית. אלו כוללים תיעוד של חפצים השמורים בכ-800 מוזיאונים, אוספים פרטיים ובתי כנסת ב-41 מדינות. המחקר והתיעוד של המרכז לאמנות יהודית מרוכזים באינדקס לאמנות יהודית ע"ש בצלאל נרקיס.

היסטוריה

המרכז לאמנות יהודית באוניברסיטת העברית בירושלים הוקם בשנת 1979 על ידי פרופ' בצלאל נרקיס, חתן פרס ישראל, במטרה לתעד את חפצי האמנות היהודית ולפתח אינדקס איקונוגרפי מקיף של נושאים יהודיים.[1] יסודו של המרכז במחקר איקונוגרפי על כתבי יד עבריים מאוירים מימי הביניים, שניהלו פרופ' נרקיס ופרופ' גבריאל סד-ריינה (פריס) בשנת 1974.

האינדקס האיקונוגרפי לאמנות יהודית כלל בתחילה ארבעה מדורים: מדור לכתבי יד עבריים מאוירים, מדור לתשמישי קדושה ומצוה, מדור לאמנות יהודית עתיקה, ומדור לאמנות יהודית מודרנית.

פרופ' בצלאל נרקיס עמד בראש המרכז עד 1991. המנהלת הבאה, פרופ' עליזה כהן-מושלין ייסדה מדור חמישי - המדור לאדריכלות יהודית ולבתי קברות יהודיים. תחת הנהגתה יצאו משלחות מחקר רבות למרכז ומזרח אירופה הפוסט-קומוניסטי, שלא היו נגישים בעבר לחוקרים מערביים, על מנת לתעד בתי כנסת בסכנת הכחדה ומצבות.[2] בנוסף, משנת 1994 תיעד המרכז בתי כנסת בגרמניה ששרדו את המשטר הנאצי. פרויקטי התיעוד בגרמניה נעשו בשיתוף פעולה עם המחלקה להיסטוריה של אדריכלות באוניברסיטה הטכנית בבראונשוויג, בראשותו של פרופ' הרמן תיס. בשנת 1997 שיתוף פעולה זה מוסד כ"בית תפילה" – יחידת מחקר לאדריכלות יהודית באירופה.[3]

בשנת 2012 הכירה ממשלת ישראל בארכיוני המרכז לאמנות יהודית כחלק מ"מורשת לאומית".[4]

המדור לספרים יהודיים מודפסים הוקם בשנת 2018.

פרסומים

  • Jewish Art (בשנים 1974–1985, Journal of Jewish Art) הוא שנתון המוקדש למחקר של אמנות יהודית. עורכיו היו בצלאל נרקיס ועליזה כהן-מושלין; הפרופסורים זיוה עמישי-מייזלש וביאנקה קוחנל שימשו כעורכות אורחות של שניים מהגיליונות.[5]
  • רימונים הוא כתב עת לאמנות יהודית בעברית, שמטרתו להביא את תוצאות המחקר האקדמי לקהל ישראלי רחב יותר.[6]
  • בין 1976–1994 פרסם המרכז לאמנות יהודית עשרה כרכים של "אינדקס ירושלים לאמנות יהודית" כאגד כרטיסיות על כתבי יד עבריים מאוירים, תשמישי קדושה ואמנות יהודית עתיקה.[7]
  • החל משנת 2007, מפרסם "בית תפילה" סדרה של מונוגרפיות בנושא ארכיטקטורה יהודית וסדרה של מחקרים קטנים יותר על מבנים יהודיים בודדים. העורכים של שתי הסדרות הם עליזה כהן-מושלין והרמן תיס, והן פורסמו על ידי Imhof Verlag באנגלית וגרמנית.[8]

אינדקס לאמנות יהודית ע"ש בצלאל נרקיס

האינדקס לאמנות יהודית ע"ש בצלאל נרקיס הוא "המוזיאון הווירטואלי" היהודי הגדול ביותר בעולם, הכולל יותר מ-560,000 תמונות מכ-800 מוזיאונים, אוספים פרטיים ובתי כנסת ממדינות רבות, כמו גם תוכניות אדריכליות של כ-1,700 בתי כנסת. התמונות ממוינות לפי נושא איקונוגרפי, סוג החפצים, מוצא, תאריך ועוד. הדיגיטציה של האינדקס מתבצעת כעת בשיתוף פעולה עם הספרייה הלאומית וחטיבת היודאיקה של ספריית אוניברסיטת הרווארד.[9][10][11]
