החגורה השחורה

החגורה השחורה היא כינוי היסטורי של אזור מגורים מדרום לעיר שיקגו, שבתקופת מלחמת העולם הראשונה אוכלס בצפיפות רבה על ידי אוכלוסייה אפרו-אמריקאית.

במהלך מלחמת העולם הראשונה נוצר מחסור בעובדים בערי התעשייה בצפון ארצות הברית, זאת בעקבות גיוס חובה לצבא, והירידה במספר האנשים שהיגרו מאירופה. מצב זה והמשך מקרי האלימות כלפי אפרו-אמריקאים בדרום ארצות הברית, הביאו תוך זמן קצר מאוד, להגירה המונית של אפרו-אמריקאים לערי תעשייה בצפון, וביניהן שיקגו. כבר בשנת 1919, היו בשיקגו לבדה, כ-500,000 תושבים חדשים מהקהילה האפרו-אמריקאית, בה בשעה שרוב תושביה הלבנים היו באירופה בחזית. לאחר המלחמה, חזרו תושבי שיקגו הוותיקים למקומות עבודתם, ונוצר מתח בין הקהילות. בעוד שבעיר שיקגו הוותיקה, גדלה הקהילה האפרו-אמריקאית מ-44,000 תושבים ב-1909, לכ-110,000 לאחר מלחמת העולם הראשונה ב-1920, אך כ-90% מהאפרו-אמריקאים שהיגרו לשיקגו, התרכזו באזור קטן יחסית בדרום העיר, שכונה משום כך "החגורה השחורה".^[1]

אף שהאזור היה עני ביחס לשכונות שסביבו, ותנאי המגורים היו קשים יחסית, שכר הדירה היה גבוה מאשר בשכונות הסמוכות עקב הצפיפות הרבה.
