קימל הנחה תוכנית אירוח בשעות הלילה המאוחרות, הארוכה ביותר מבין כל מנחי הטלוויזיה בשעות המאוחרות הנוכחיים בארצות הברית, לאחר פרישתו של קונאן אובריאן מהנחיית תוכנית בשעות הלילה המאוחרות.
ביוגרפיה
קימל נולד בברוקלין, ניו יורק, כשהיה בן תשע עבר יחד עם משפחתו ללאס וגאס. עם סיום לימודיו התיכוניים למד שנה באוניברסיטה של נבדה והמשיך בלימודיו באוניברסיטת המדינה של אריזונה במשך שנתיים נוספות, כל זאת ללא קבלת תואר.
קריירה
בטלוויזיה
באביב1996 הופיע קימל כ"ג'ימי הבחור של פוקס" בפרומואים ברשת הטלוויזיה פוקס. בשנים 1999–2004 הנחה את התוכנית הקומית הפארודית "גברים עם כבוד", לצד אדם קרולה בערוץ קומדי סנטרל האמריקאי. במקביל, הגיש את השעשועון "Win Ben Stein's Money", עליו זכה ב-1999 בפרס אמי ל"מנחה שעשועון הטלוויזיה הטוב ביותר". בשנת 2003 החל להנחות את תוכנית הלייט-נייט "ג'ימי קימל לייב" ברשת ABC, ובחודש אפריל 2020 החל להנחות את התוכנית "מי רוצה להיות מיליונר" ברשת זו.
החל מינואר 2023, הפכה תוכנית האירוח שלו לתוכנית הלייט-נייט שעדיין משודרת הכי הרבה זמן, 20 שנה, במהלכם נשא 3,500 מונולוגים, אירח 10,000 כוכבים ו-5 נשיאי ארצות הברית.
במאי 2023 הודיעו הפקת התוכנית על הפסקת שידור התוכנית עקב שביתת התסטריטאים והשחקנים בהוליווד. תוכנית האחרונה של התוכנית טרם השביתה שודר ב-1 במאי 2023.
בשנת 1988התחתן קימל עם ג'ינה מאדי, מנישואים אלו נולדו לו שני ילדים. השניים התגרשו ב-2002. באותה שנה החל קימל לצאת עם הקומיקאיתשרה סילברמן, אחרי מערכת יחסים של חמש שנים, בני הזוג נפרדו בקיץ2008. ב-31 בינואר 2008, הופיעה בתוכנית "ג'ימי קימל בשידור חי!" והכריזה ש"I'm Fucking Matt Damon" עם קטע מוזיקלי קצר[3]. הסרטון קיבל פרסום רב, הפך ויראלי וזכה לבסוף בפרס אמי[4]. בתוכנית הבאה, העלה קימל את הקטע "I'm fucking Ben Affleck". הקטעים תואמו יחד מראש. באוקטובר אותה שנה חזרו לצאת יחד, אולם נפרדו סופית במרץ2009[5]. בשנת 2010 בהמשך להופעות המדוברות יצא מערכון ה-"Handsome Men's Club" בו הוכרז כי קימל אינו נאה[6].
באוגוסט 2024 קימל סירב להצעה להנחות את טקס פרסי האוסקר ה-97, והסביר בפרק בפודקאסט "Politickin'" שהמניע להחלטתו נובע מלחץ ועיסוק מוגבר בטקס מאשר בתוכנית הלילה שלו, שעליה רמז שייתכן ותיסגר בקרוב[7].
ביולי2019, הוציא קימל את ספרו הראשון, "האווז הרציני", ספר תמונות אינטראקטיבי לילדים הכולל איורים משלו שמטילה על הקוראים משימה לעזור לגרום לאוז הרציני לחייך[8].

ביוני 2021 דווח כי הנשיא לשעבר דונלד טראמפ פנה למשרד המשפטים על מנת לחקור הטיה פוליטית בתוכניתו של ג'ימי קימל ותוכניות פריים-טיים אמריקאיות אחרות[13].
בחודש נובמבר 2022 הודה לראשונה קימל כי עקב הביקורת הלא מידתית על טראמפ איבד "חצי או יותר" מצופיו לאור העובדה כי לפני עשור תוכניתו היה ה"פופולרית ביותר בקרב רפובליקנים"[14]. לצד זאת, הצדיק קימל את דעותיו בכך שטען כי "הדגל לא שייך רק להם"[14].
במרץ 2023, בעת שהנחה את טקס פרסי האוסקר ה-95, ראיין את זוכת פרס נובל לשלום, הצעירה הפקיסטנית מלאלה יוספזאי. בעקבות ראיון זה, הוא זכה לביקורות מעורבות ולכינויי גנאי כמו "חרפה לאומית"[15].
השפעות
קימל הושפע רבות בקומדיה מדייוויד לטרמן והווארד סטרן. קימל אמר על לטרמן[16][17], "המופע שלו היה פשוט כל כך מוזר ושונה. מעולם לא ראיתי דבר כזה. לא הכרתי מישהו שהיה לו חוש הומור כזה"[18]. קימל התבדח לא פעם שהסיבה היחידה שהוא נכנס לעסקים של מופעים היא להיות ידיד עם לטרמן; הוא גם שאל מדוע שמישהו יצפה בתוכנית שלו במקום בתוכנית של לטרמן.

קימל התחתן עם ג'ינה מאדי ב-1988; הם התגרשו בשנת 2002[22]. בתם קתרין נולדה בשנת 1991 ובנם קווין נולד בשנת 1993. היו לו מערכת יחסים עם הקומיקאית שרה סילברמן מ-2002 עד מרץ 2009[23][24].
