ג'יימס וארני פאנטה (באנגלית: James Varni Panetta; נולד ב-1 באוקטובר 1969) הוא פוליטיקאי אמריקאי, חבר המפלגה הדמוקרטית, המכהן כחבר בית הנבחרים של ארצות הברית מטעם מחוז הקונגרס ה-20 של מדינת קליפורניה. פאנטה, בנו של מזכיר ההגנה של ארצות הברית לשעבר ליאון פאנטה, נבחר לקונגרס האמריקאי ב-2016. טרם היבחרו לתפקיד היה סגן התובע המחוזי של מונטריי.

ביוגרפיה

פאנטה הוא הצעיר מבין שלושת ילדיהם של סילביה וארני וליאון פאנטה, לשעבר מזכיר ההגנה של ארצות הברית וראש ה-CIA. פאנטה סיים את לימודיו התיכוניים בבית הספר התיכון "כרמל" השוכן בעיר כרמל שבקליפורניה. לאחר מכן למד במכללת חצי האי מונטריי ובאוניברסיטת קליפורניה בדייוויס, והשלים לימודי תואר ראשון ביחסים בינלאומיים. לאחר מכן התמחה במחלקת המדינה של ארצות הברית. פאנטה קיבל את תואר שני במשפטים מבית הספר למשפטים של אוניברסיטת סנטה קרלה.

הוא הצטרף לכוחות המילואים של צי ארצות הברית כקצין מודיעין וסיים ב-2007 סבב לחימה במלחמת אפגניסטן כשהוא כפוף לפיקוד המבצעים המיוחדים המשולבים. עבור סבב לחימה זה עוטר פאנטה בכוכב הארד[2]. פאנטה עבד במשרד הפרקליטות של מחוז אלמידה ואחר כך כסגן התובע המחוזי של מונטריי[3].

לאחר שבנובמבר 2015 סם פאר, חבר בית הנבחרים של ארצות הברית המכהן מטעם מחוז הקונגרס העשרים של קליפורניה, על כוונתו שלא להתמודד לבחירה מחדש לקונגרס, הודיע פאנטה על מועמדותו לבית הנבחרים לקראת בחירות 2016 בארצות הברית. ביום הבחירות הכלליות שנערך בנובמבר 2016 גבר פאנטה על קייטי לוציוס ונבחר לתפקיד. הוא הושבע לתפקידו בראשית ינואר 2017. עמיתיו הדמוקרטיים בחרו בו לשמש כמצליף אזורי בסיעה הדמוקרטית עבור צפון קליפורניה וחופה המרכזי ועבור הוואי ואיי ארצות הברית באוקיינוס השקט.

פעמיים, בשנת 2018 ואחר כך ב-2019, הציג פאנטה הצעת חוק הקוראת לצמצם סוגים מסוימים של ניסויים בבעלי חיים. בשלהי 2019 הצביע פאנטה בעד שני סעיפי ההדחה של דונלד טראמפ[4].

רעייתו קארי היא שופטת בבית המשפט העליון של מחוז מונטריי, ולהם שתי בנות.
