הסרט הוקרן בבכורה עולמית בפסטיבל הסרטים הבינלאומי בטורונטו ב-14 בספטמבר 2020, והוא יופץ לבתי הקולנוע ב-23 ביולי 2021.

תקציר העלילה

הסרט מבוסס על סיפורו האמיתי של ג'ו בל, אדם שיצא לטיול ברחבי ארצות הברית כדי להעלות את המודעות לבריונות עקב התאבדות בנו ג'יידן, שהיה קורבן לבריונות הומופובית.[2]

הפקה

באפריל 2015 הוכרז כי קארי ג'וג'י פוקונאגה יביים את הסרט, לפי תסריט שנכתב על ידי לארי מק'מרטרי ודיאנה אוסאנה. בנוסף הוכרז כי חברת A24 תהיה אחראית על הפקת והפצת הסרט.[3] באפריל 2019 הצטרפו מארק וולברג, ריד מילר, קוני בריטון, מקסוול ג'נקינס וגארי סיניז לצוות השחקנים. ריינאלדו מרקוס גרין ביים את הסרט, במקום פוקונאגה שעדיין שימש כמפיק, לצד וולברג, ג'ייק ג'ילנהול וסטיבן לוינסון ששימשו גם כמפיקים, ו-A24 לא שימשה מפיצה ומפיקה בסופו של דבר.[4][5][6]

הפצה

הסרט הוקרן בבכורה עולמית בפסטיבל הסרטים הבינלאומי בטורונטו 2020 ב-14 בספטמבר 2020.[9] זמן קצר לאחר מכן, "אולפני סולסטיס" (אנ') רכשו זכויות הפצה לסרט תמורת 20 מיליון דולר.[10] הוא אמור היה לצאת לאקרנים ב-19 בפברואר 2021.[11] עם זאת, הוא הוצא מלוח הזמנים.[12] ב-8 באפריל 2021 הוכרז כי נטפליקס נמצאת במשא ומתן סופי לרכישת זכויות ההפצה של הסרט מאולפני סולסטיס.[13]

ב-21 במאי 2021 נמסר שזכויות ההפצה נרכשו מ"סולסטיס" על ידי החברות "רודסייד אטרקשנז" (אנ'), ו"ורטיקל אנטרטיינמנט" (אנ'), כאשר הראשונה תפיץ את הסרט לבתי הקולנוע, והשנייה תהיה אחראית לאחר מכן על ההפצה לצפייה ביתית. העסקה בוצעה לאחר שהתברר שמערך ההפצה של "סולסטיס" בנוי לסדר גודל של 2000 בתי קולנוע ומעלה, אולם לאור מגבלות מגפת הקורונה ונושא הסרט, הוא מתאים להפצה מצומצמת יותר. בשלב הראשון הוא יופץ ל-750 בתי קולנוע בלבד, וההפצה תורחב בהתאם להתפתחויות[14]

אתר Rotten Tomatoes נתן לסרט ציון של 40% בהתבסס על 127 ביקורות ודירוג ממוצע של 5.5/10. בקונצנזוס הביקורתי נכתב: "המסר המרגש של Good Joe Bell – והופעת הפריצה המסעירה של ריד מילר – מתערערים למרבה הצער על ידי עלילה נוסחתית".[15] אתר Metacritic נתן לסרט ציון של 54 מתוך 100, בהתבסס על 26 מבקרים, דבר המצביע על "ביקורות חיוביות בדרך כלל".[16]
