תורת יאנג-מילס

תורת יאנג-מילס היא תורת כיול המבוססת על החבורה המרחבית האורתוגונלית $SU(N)$ , או יותר בכלליות כל אלגברת לי קומפקטית וניתנת לצמצום. תורת יאנג-מילס מנסה לתאר את התנהגותם של חלקיקים אלמנטריים בשימוש באלגבראות לי שאינן אבליות ומהווה את הבסיס לאיחוד הכוח האלקטרומגנטי ביחד עם הכוח הגרעיני החלש (באמצעות הצגתם כ $SU(2)\times U(1)$ ), ובאופן דומה מתאר היטב את הכוח הגרעיני החזק בתורה של כרומודינמיקה קוונטית (בהצגה של $SU(3)$ ). ולכן מהווה בסיס חזק להבנת המודל הסטנדרטי של פיזיקת החלקיקים.

סקירה היסטורית ותאורטית

בשנת 1954, צ'ן-נינג יאנג ורוברט מילס^[1] הרחיבו את הקונספט של תורת כיול לחבורות אבלית, כמו אלקטרודינמיקה קוונטית לחבורות לא אבליות על מנת לספק הסבר לאינטראקציה חזקה, ההצעה של יאנג-מילס הותקפה על ידי וולפגנג פאולי, באומרו שהקוונטה של שדה יאנג-מילס חייב להיות חסר מסה על מנת לשמור על אינווריאנטיות תחת הכיול, ולכן רעיונם נדחה עד שבשנת 1960 ההסבר אודות מסת החלקיקים הנוצרת משבירת סימטריה ספונטנית שהוצע על ידי ג'פרי גולדסטון, יושירו נמבו וג'יובאנו ג'ונה-לאסינו, תקן את בעיית המסה בתורת יאנג-מילס.

חזרתה של תורת יאנג מילס לתודעה הניע את המחקר וזכתה למספר הצלחות כבירות, ביניהן איחוד הכוח האלקטרו-חלש וכרומודינמיקה קוונטית. האינטראקציה האלקטרו-חלשה מתוארת על ידי חבורת הכיול $SU(2)\times U(1)$ , כאשר הכוח הגרעיני החזק מתואר בתורת $SU(3)$ של יאנג-מילס. בוזוני הכיול חסרי המסה שמופיעים בתורה האלקטרו-חלשה מתערבבים ובעקבות שבירת סימטריה ספונטנית, מתקבלים 3 בוזונים מסיביים- בוזוני W ו-Z ופוטון כבוזון חסר מסה. המודל הסטנדרטי משלב את הכוח האלקטרו חלש ביחד עם האינטראקציה החזקה דרך חבורת הסימטריה: $SU(3)\times SU(2)\times U(1)$ . עד כה לא הצליחו לאחד את הכוח האלקטרו-חלש ביחד עם האינטראקציה החזקה, על אף שמאמינים כי באנרגיות גבוהות מספיק, דרך מדידה של קבועי צימוד יהיה ניתן להבחין בכוח יחיד.
