פניצילין היא תרופה אנטיביוטית המופרשת באופן טבעי על ידי זן מסוים של הפטרייה Penicillium chrysogenum. פניצילין הוא האנטיביוטיקה הראשונה שנתגלתה. גילויו חולל מהפכה ברוקחות וברפואה והביא למיגורן של מחלות שהיו קטלניות וגרמו למותם של מיליונים. בתמונה: ייצור פניצילין ב"בית שטראוס" בירושלים, 1945. מעבדות לייצור פניצילין הוקמו בירושלים על ידי אנשי האוניברסיטה העברית בימי מלחמת העולם השנייה, כאשר נוסחת הייצור נחשבה לסוד צבאי, במסגרת המאמץ המלחמתי של בריטניה.
