מכשיר הסייסמוגרף של ויצ'רט מ-1914

סייסמוגרף (ביוונית: σεισμός (סייסמוס) - רעידה; γράφω (גרפיה) - כתיבה) הוא מכשיר למדידת עוצמת ומיקום המוקד של רעידות אדמה.

היסטוריה

מכשיר שהצביע על התרחשות רעידות אדמה הומצא כבר בשנת 132 לספירה בסין. הסייסמוגרף שוכלל לצורתו המוכרת כיום על ידי המדען הגרמני ארנסט פון רובר פשוויץ (אנ'). סייסמומטר שבנה בפוטסדאם לשם בדיקת גרביטציה, קלט ב-17 אפריל 1889, לראשונה בהיסטוריה, רעידת אדמה רחוקה (ביפן)[1]. קדם לו באופן מסוים המדען האירי רוברט מאלט, שבשנת 1849 בנה דגם ראשוני של סייסמוגרף, וניסה לקלוט באמצעותו גלים סייסמיים שיוצרו מפיצוץ מבוקר שביצע[2].

אופן פעולה

הסייסמוגרף מודד ורושם, בנוסף לעוצמת הרעש, גם את סוגי הגלים השונים המשתחררים בעת רעידת אדמה. את עוצמת התנודות מודדים בעזרת סולם ריכטר, המתבסס על גובה התנודות הנמדדות. הסייסמוגרף מדפיס תרשים המתאר את תנודות האדמה, הנקרא סייסמוגרמה.

מכשיר הסייסמוגרף בנוי ממסגרת מתכת, מגליל נייר המחובר אליה, ממשקולת הנעה באוויר ומעיפרון המחובר אל המשקולת כדי לרשום את התנודות. בזמן רעידת אדמה או תנודות אחרות, המסגרת זזה בעוד המשקולת נשארת במקומה, והעיפרון רושם את התזוזות על הנייר[3].

הסייסמוגרף מצייר גלים שונים שנחלקים לשתי קבוצות עיקריות: גלי P או Primary waves הם הגלים הראשונים שמגיעים ממוקד הרעידה. מהמוקד הגלים מתפשטים בצורה סימטרית כאשר הגלים החזקים ביותר ימדדו בדיוק מעל המוקד באזור שנקרא "מרכז הרעש" ("אפיסנטר" - epicenter). בשל עוצמתם הרבה מסוגלים גלים אלו לעבור דרך כל חומר בכל מצב צבירה ולכן מתפשטים בתוך כדור הארץ דרך המאגמה ודרך גלעין כדור הארץ; גלי S או Secondary waves הם הגלים המשניים שנוצרים בעקבות הרעידה. גלים אלו חלשים בהרבה ומסוגלים לנוע רק דרך חומר מוצק, ולכן עוברים רק דרך קרום כדור הארץ. בשיטת הטריאנגולציה ניתן לחשב בדיוק היכן נמצא מוקד הרעש. כיום מערכות מדידה סייסמיות ממוחשבות ברחבי העולם מספקות מיקום מדויק של מוקד הרעש בתוך שניות מקרות האירוע[4].
