סטיבן טאונסנד (באנגלית: Stephen J. Townsend) הוא קצין בדימוס בדרגת גנרל בצבא ארצות הברית. פיקד על פיקוד אפריקה של ארצות הברית, על פיקוד האימונים וההדרכה של צבא ארצות הברית, על הקורפוס המוטס ה-18 ועל כוח משימה משותף משולב - מבצע נחישות טבועה למלחמה בארגון המדינה האסלאמית.

ביוגרפיה

טאונסנד נולד בשונפלד בבוואריה שבמערב גרמניה, אביו היה סטודנט לרפואה אפגאני ואמו סטודנטית מקומית לאמנות. 11 ימים לאחר לידתו אומץ על ידי זוג אמריקאי, ג'יימס וגרדלין טאונסנד.[1] אביו המאמץ שירת באותה עת בגרמניה כנגד בכוחות השריון של צבא ארצות הברית.[2] הוא גדל במספר בסיסים צבאיים ולמד בתיכון בג'ורג'יה.

הוא סיים לימודי תואר ראשון במכללת צפון ג'ורג'יה במסגרת מלגה מתוכנית הכשרת קציני המילואים של צבא ארצות הברית, וב-1982 התגייס לצבא.[2] שירת כמפקד מחלקה וסגן מפקד פלוגה בגדוד השני של חטיבה 505 בדיוויזיה המוטסת ה-82. במהלך שירותו נטל חלק ב"מבצע זעם דחוף", הפלישה האמריקאית לגרנדה ב-1983. עבר לדיוויזיית החי"ר השביעית, שימש קצין מבצעים ומפקד פלוגה בגדוד הרביעי של חטיבה 21. לאחר מכן שירת כקצין מבצעים במטה רגימנט הריינג'רס ה-75. במסגרת זו השתתף ב"מבצע מטרה צודקת", הפלישה האמריקאית לפנמה ב-1989. לאחר מכן פיקד על פלוגה בגדוד השלישי של הריינג'רס.

לאחר לימודים במכללה לפיקוד ומטה של הצבא הוצב כקצין מבצעים של גדוד הריינג'רס השלישי והשתתף ב"מבצע שמירת הדמוקרטיה", המעורבות הצבאית בהאיטי בעקבות המהפכה. שירת כקצין תכנון ואסטרטגיה במטה פיקוד האוקיינוס השקט ועוזר מיוחד של מפקד הפיקוד. בתפקידו הבא שירת כקצין מבצעים של חטיבה 2 בדיוויזיה 78 העוסקת בה באימונים והדרכת כוחות המילואים של הצבא.

בעת התרחשותם של פיגועי 11 בספטמבר פיקד על הגדוד הרביעי בחטיבת החי"ר 31 ("דובי הקוטב") של הדיוויזיה ההררית העשירית.[2] חודשים ספורים לאחר מכן הוביל את הגדוד במסגרת כוח משימה מיוחד במהלך "מבצע אנקונדה" במלחמת אפגניסטן.[2] לאחר לימודים במכללת המלחמה של הצבא שימש קצין מבצעים בדיוויזיה ההררית העשירית וקצין מבצעים של כוח המשימה המשותף 180 שנשלח לאפגניסטן. ב-2004 מונה למפקד בריגדת הסטרייקרים השלישית של דיוויזיית החי"ר השנייה והוביל ב-2007 את כוח המשימה של הבריגדה במבצע השתלטות על העיר בעקובה שבמחוז דיאלא בעיראק.[3] שימש עוזר מפקד פיקוד מרכז של ארצות הברית וסגן מפקד הדיוויזיה המוטסת ה-101, עמה נלחם באפגניסטן. בדצמבר 2012 מונה למפקד הדיוויזיה ההררית העשירית, ובמסגרת זו שימש מפקד אזור הגבול בין אפגניסטן לפקיסטן וכן עסק בהכשרת כוחות צבא אפגניסטן.

במאי 2015 מונה למפקד הקורפוס המוטס ה-18 ושירת בתפקיד עד ינואר 2018. במהלך כהונתו שימש מאוגוסט 2016 ועד ספטמבר 2017 גם כמפקד הכוח המשולב למלחמה בארגון המדינה האסלאמית. במרץ 2018 קודם לדרגת גנרל ומונה למפקד פיקוד האימונים וההדרכה של צבא ארצות הברית. ביולי 2019 הוחלף על ידי פול פאנק ומונה למפקד פיקוד אפריקה של ארצות הברית. הוא כיהן בתפקיד עד פרישתו באוגוסט 2022.

טאונסנד בעל תואר ראשון בפסיכולוגיה ממכללת צפון ג'ורג'יה, בעל תואר שני מהמכללה לפיקוד ומטה של הצבא ותואר שני ממכללת המלחמה של צבא ארצות הברית. הוא נשוי למליסה, והם הורים לשני בנים, שניהם משרתים בצבא.
