ניסוי הקפה של גוסטב השלישי מלך שוודיה היה מחקר תאומים שנערך בהוראת גוסטב השלישי, מלך שוודיה במטרה לחקור את ההשפעות הבריאותיות של קפה. אף שקיים ספק לגבי המהימנות של האירוע,[1] הניסוי שנערך במחצית השנייה של המאה ה-18, לא הצליח להוכיח שקפה הוא משקה מסוכן.

רקע

קפה הגיע לראשונה לשוודיה סביב 1674,[1], אבל כמעט שלא השתמשו בו עד תחילת המאה ה-18, שאז הפך לאופנתי בקרב העשירים.[2][3] ב-1746 הוצא צו מלכותי כנגד קפה ותה בשל "השימוש לרעה וההפרזה של שתיית תה וקפה".[2] על צריכת משקאות אלה הוטל מס כבד, והתחמקות מתשלום המס על החומרים גררה קנסות והחרמה של הכוסות והצלחות.[2] מאוחר יותר נאסרה שתיית קפה לחלוטין. למרות האיסור צריכת הקפה נמשכה.[2]

גוסטב השלישי, שראה בצריכת הקפה סכנה לבריאות הציבור, והיה נחוש להוכיח את ההשפעות הבריאותיות השליליות של המשקה, הורה לערוך ניסוי מדעי.[3]

הניסוי

המלך הורה לערוך את הניסוי תוך שימוש בשני תאומים זהים. שני התאומים נשפטו בגין פשעים שביצעו ונגזר עליהם עונש מוות. גזר הדין שלהם הומתק למאסר עולם בתנאי שכל יום אחד מהתאומים ישתה שלושה קנקני קפה,[1] והשני ישתה כמות זהה של תה, למשך שארית חייהם.[4]

שני רופאים מונו לפקח על הניסוי ולדווח על תוצאותיו למלך.[5] לרוע המזל, שני הרופאים נפטרו, ככל הנראה מסיבות טבעיות, לפני שהניסוי הושלם.[4] גוסטב השלישי, שנרצח ב-1792, מת גם הוא לפני שראה את התוצאות הסופיות. הראשון משני התאומים שמת היה שותה התה שנפטר בגיל 83. תאריך מותו של התאום שותה הקפה ששרד אינו ידוע.[6]

לאחר מעשה

ב-1794 ניסתה הממשלה שוב להטיל איסור על שתיית קפה. האיסור, שחודש מספר פעמים עד שנות ה-20 של המאה ה-19, מעולם לא הצליח להפסיק את שתיית הקפה.[2] מהרגע שהאיסור על שתיית הקפה בוטל, הפך הקפה למשקה הדומיננטי בשוודיה, שמאז היא אחת מהמדינות שבהן צריכת הקפה לנפש היא בין הגבוהות בעולם.[4]

הניסוי היה קרוי בהלצה "הניסוי הקליני הראשון של שוודיה".[1]
