נגרות היא מקצוע עיבוד עץ ומוצריו לכדי מוצרים לתועלת האדם: רהיטים, כלים, פיגומים, בתים וכדומה. העבודות נעשות בעזרת כלי עבודה כמו פטיש, מסור, אזמל ומקצועה. אדם העוסק בנגרות נקרא נגר.

נגרות בתקופת ימי הביניים ותקופת הרנסאנס הייתה מקצוע נבחר בעל חשיבות רבה שדרש כוח גופני וידיים חזקות ומפותחות לחיתוך העץ ולעיבודו. כיום מבוצעות רוב המלאכות בנגריה על ידי מכונות חשמליות, והעיסוק בנגרות מסורתית עבר להיות נחלת האמנים והחובבים.

תולדותיה

יחד עם האבן, העץ הוא בין חומרי הבנייה העתיקים ביותר.

אחד מחפצי העץ המוכרים הקדומים ביותר הוא חלק של קרש מלוטש מהאתר האשלי של גשר בנות יעקב שבישראל, מלפני יותר מ-780 אלף שנה. באירופה, בסין ובאפריקה הופיעו כלי העץ הראשונים לחיפוש מזון ולציד לפני 400 אלף שנה.[1]

חלק מהשימוש הראשון בעץ למבנים על ידי בני אדם מתוארך לתקופת האבן לפני כחצי מיליון שנה, כאשר בזמביה שבאפריקה, הפלטפורמות או שבילי ההליכה הראשונים הורכבו מבולי עץ מחורצים ומחודדים.[2]

היכולת לעצב עץ לכלי עבודה, למחסים ולכלי נשק השתפרה עם ההתקדמות הטכנולוגית בתקופת המעבר מתקופת האבן לתקופת הברונזה ועד לתקופת הברזל. כמה מהעדויות הארכאולוגיות מתקופת האבן המאוחרת לנגרות הן מעטפות של בארי מים. אלה כוללות מבנה מעצי אלון ולוז משנת 5256 לפני הספירה, שנמצא באוסטרוב שבצ'כיה, ואחת שנבנתה באמצעות עץ אלון מפוצל עם שגם ומגרעת ופינות מחורצות שנחפרה במזרח גרמניה, מלפני כ-7,000 שנה מהתקופה הנאוליתית המוקדמת.[3][4]
