טאמוורת' (באנגלית: Tamworth) היא עיר במדינת ניו סאות' ויילס שבאוסטרליה. העיר, השוכנת על גדות נהר פיל (Peel River), היא מרכז אזורי ראשי לאזור ניו אינגלנד. העיר שוכנת באמצע הדרך בין סידני לבין בריזביין, שתי הערים הגדולות ביותר בחוף המזרחי של אוסטרליה. אוכלוסיית העיר מנתה 36,131 תושבים במפקד 2011.[1]

טאמוורת' ידועה בכינוי "העיר הראשונה של האורות" ("First City of Lights") בהיותה היישוב הראשון באוסטרליה שרחובותיו הוארו בתאורה חשמלית ב-1888.[2] כמו כן היא מפורסמת בתור בירת מוזיקת הקאנטרי של אוסטרליה בשל העובדה שהיא מארחת מדי שנה בסוף ינואר את פסטיבל טאמוורת' למוזיקת קאנטרי, השני בגודלו בכל העולם. העיר גם ידועה כבירת הסוסים של אוסטרליה בשל האירועים הרבים בתחום הנערכים בה, הגדולים מסוגם בחצי הכדור הדרומי.

היסטוריה

האירופאי הראשון להגיע לאזור היה ג'ון אוקסלי (John Oxley) שעבר דרך עמק פיל ב-1818 והתרשם ממנו מאוד לטובה.[3] ב-1831 הוקמו באזור התחנות הראשונות לגידול בקר ולגידול צאן ובאותה שנה הוקצה שטח גדול באזור לצרכים חקלאיים. בשנות השלושים של המאה ה-19 החלה העיירה להתפתח על הגדה הדרומית של נהר פיל. ב-1850 הוכרזה העיירה באופן רשמי על הגדה השנייה על בסיס היישוב הקיים.[4][5] העיירה נעשתה לעיירה ראשית ונקראה טאמוורת' על שם עיר הנושאת את אותו שם השוכנת במחוז סטפורדשיר שבאנגליה, שיוצג באותו זמן בפרלמנט על ידי רוברט פיל שהיה ראש ממשלת בריטניה. העיר שגשגה וב-1878 חוברה לרשת מסילות הברזל.[3] ב-9 בנובמבר 1888 הייתה טאמוורת' לעיר הראשונה בחצי הכדור הדרומי שרחובותיה הוארו בפנסים חשמליים.[2] ב-1946 הוכרזה טאמוורת' כעיר.[6]
