המיתון הגדול (באנגלית: The Great Recession) הוא המיתון הכלכלי העולמי החמור שהחל בסוף העשור הראשון של המאה ה-21 בעקבות התנפצות בועת הנדל"ן בארצות הברית[1][2] והמשבר הפיננסי שבא בעקבותיו. לתקופה זו היו השלכות מרחיקות לכת שהשפיעו על מדינות רבות ברחבי העולם. ההיקף ומועד ההתרחשות של המיתון השתנה בפועל ממדינה למדינה (ראו מפה מצורפת).[3][4] קרן המטבע הבין-לאומית הגדירה את המיתון הגדול כהתמוטטות הכלכלית והפיננסית החמורה ביותר מאז השפל הגדול.

ההשפעה של המיתון הגדול הייתה נרחבת, והשפיעה על כלכלות, בתי עסק ואנשים אינדיבידואלים רבים ברחבי העולם. שיעורי האבטלה זינקו באותה העת כאשר במקביל בתי עסק רבים התקשו במיוחד לשרוד. שוקי המניות חוו ירידות חדות, וממשלות רבות נאלצו באותה התקופה לנסות לייצב את הכלכלות שלהן.

למיתון הגדול היו השלכות חברתיות וכלכליות ניכרות כאשר מיליוני אנשים איבדו באותה התקופה את בתיהם, את מקום עבודתם ואת חסכונותיהם.

תעשיות מסוימות נפגעו גם הן במיוחד במהלך המיתון הגדול. תעשיית הרכב בארצות הברית לדוגמה התמודדה במהלך המיתון עם ירידה חדה במכירות, והדבר הוביל להתערבות ממשלתית כדי למנוע את קריסתן של יצרניות הרכב האמריקניות. כמו כן גם ענף הבנייה ברחבי העולם נפגע במיוחד במהלך תקופת המיתון כאשר עיקולים ופשיטות רגל הפכו נפוצים באותה התקופה.

המיתון לא הורגש באותה מידה ברחבי העולם. בעוד שרוב הכלכלות המפותחות בעולם, ובמיוחד הכלכלות של אמריקה הצפונית, אמריקה הדרומית ואירופה, נקלעו למיתון קשה ומתמשך, כלכלות מתפתחות רבות לא הושפעו במיוחד - במיוחד סין, הודו ואינדונזיה, שכלכלותיהן צמחו באופן ניכר בתקופה זו. באופן דומה גם הכלכלות של אזור אוקיאניה לא הושפעו במיוחד באותה התקופה בשל קרבתם לשווקים של אסיה.
