גנאיוס קורנליוס סקיפיו אסינה

גנאיוס קורנליוס סקיפיו אסינה (בלטינית: Gnaeus Cornelius Scipio Asina) היה מדינאי ומצביא רומאי, שפיקד פעמיים על כוחות צבא וצי במלחמה הפונית הראשונה (264-241 לפנה"ס).

קורותיו

קורנליוס סקיפיו נבחר לקונסול בפעם הראשונה בשנת 260 לפנה"ס, השנה החמישית למלחמה. זמן קצר קודם לכן בנו הרומאים את הצי המלחמתי הראשון בתולדותיהם, לאחר שהבינו כי לא יוכלו להכריע את הקרתגים ולסלקם מסיציליה מבלי להשיג תחילה שליטה בים. קורנליוס סקיפיו קיבל את הפיקוד על הצי, והפיקוד על חילות היבשה נמסר לידי עמיתו לקונסולאט גאיוס דואיליוס. בעוד עיקר הצי מתארגן ברומא, הפליג סקיפיו בראש 17 אוניות אל מסאנה (מֶסִינָה), כדי להכין את מעבר הצי והצבא אל האי.

בעת שהותו במסאנה הגיעו אליו ידיעות כי ליפארה, הגדולה בערי האיים הליפאריים, מוכנה לבגוד בקרתגים ולעבור לצדה של רומא. לפיכך נחפז אליה קורנליוס סקיפיו עם אוניותיו מבלי להמתין לשאר הצי. דבר בואו אל ליפארה הגיע לאוזני חניבעל גיסקו, מפקד חילות קרתגו באי, והוא שלח אליה שייטת בת עשרים אוניות בפיקוד בּוֹאוֹדֶס. השייטת הקרתגית הגיעה אל ליפארה בלילה והטילה על נמלה הסגר מן הים. צוותי האוניות הרומיות גילו למחרת בבוקר כי נלכדו בנמל, ומאחר שהיו חסרי ניסיון בקרבות ימיים, אחזה בהם בהלה והם הפקירו את אוניותיהם ונמלטו לחוף. קורנליוס סקיפיו הופתע אף הוא, ולאחר שנותר בלי אנשיו הסגיר את עצמו לקרתגים.[1]

קורנליוס סקיפיו שוחרר ככל הנראה משביו לאחר ניצחון רגולוס בקרב אדיס (255 לפנה"ס), משום שהוא נבחר בפעם השנייה לקונסול ב-254 לפנה"ס. במהלך כהונתו השנייה כבש את פנורמוס יחד עם עמיתו אָוּלוּס אָטִילְיוּס קָלָטִינוּס (Aulus Atilius Calatinus). על הישגו זה התכבד בתהלוכת ניצחון.

הכינוי "אסינה"

מקרוביוס, הגראמטיקן הרומאי בן המאה ה־5, כותב כי הכינוי "אָסִינָה", שפירושו בלטינית "אָתוֹן", הודבק לאחד מאבות משפחת הקורנליים בעקבות מעשה יוצא דופן, וכנהוג ברומא עבר בירושה לצאצאיו. איש זה התבקש, על פי המסופר, להמציא עֲרֵבִים לנדוניה עבור בתו או לרכישת נחלת קרקע, וכדי להוכיח את המטילים ספק באמינותו על טעותם, הוליך לתוך הפורום אתון נושאת ככרות כסף.[2]

חוקר העת העתיקה ווֹלְבֶּנְק סבור כי הקוֹגְנוֹמֶן הודבק לקורנליוס סקיפיו לאחר התבוסה המחפירה בקרב ליפארה. הוא מסתמך על פליניוס (NH 8.169), אשר בין שאר דבריו על בהמות-משא הוא כותב: "יש (לאתונות) חיבה גדולה לוולדותיהן, אך סלידה גדולה עוד יותר ממים; הן יעברו למענם באש, אך אם יפריד ביניהם פלג מים אף הקטן ביותר – יחששו להרטיב את פרסותיהן."[3]
