ג'ורג' (באנגלית: George) היא העיר השנייה בגודלה בפרובינציית הכף המערבי בדרום אפריקה. העיר היא מרכז נופש וכנסים פופולרי, ומשמשת כמרכז אדמיניסטרטיבי ומסחרי חשוב. העיר נקראת על שמו של המלך הבריטי ג'ורג' השלישי. העיר ממוקמת בערך באמצע הדרך בין קייפטאון לפורט אליזבת.[1] ג'ורג' ממוקמת על רמה של 10 קילומטרים בין הרי אוטניקה מצפון והאוקיינוס ההודי מדרום.

היסטוריה

לפני ההתיישבות האירופית בסוף המאה ה-17 האזור היה מיושב על ידי שבט הקויקוי.[2]

היישוב שעתיד להפוך לג'ורג' הוקם כתוצאה מהביקוש הגובר לעצים. בשנת 1777 הקימה חברת הודו המזרחית ההולנדית נקודה לאספקת עצים.[2] בשנת 1811 הכפר הוכרזה כעצמאית על ידי השלטונות הבריטיים.[3][4] הרחוב הראשי של העיר, רחוב יורק, נקרא על שמו של בנו השני של המלך ג'ורג', הנסיך פרדריק, דוכס יורק ואלבני.[5] הכפר ג'ורג' קיבל מעמד של עיר ב-24 במרץ 1837.[2][4]
