איירין קארה אסקאלרה (Irene Cara Escalera‏; 18 במרץ 1959 – 25 בנובמבר 2022) הייתה זמרת ושחקנית אמריקאית, זוכת פרס אוסקר לשנת 1984 בקטגוריית השיר המקורי הטוב ביותר על השיר "Flashdance... What a Feeling". ידועה גם כמבצעת השירים "Out Here on My Own" ו- "Fame", מתוך הסרט "תהילה (Fame)" שבו השתתפה.

ביוגרפיה

קארה נולדה בברונקס לאב פוארטו ריקני ולאם אמריקאית ממוצא קובני, ולה שתי אחיות ושני אחים. בגיל שלוש נמנתה קארה עם חמישיית הגמר בתחרות מיס אמריקה הקטנה. החלה לנגן על פסנתר לפי שמיעה בגיל צעיר ולאחר מכן החלה ללמוד מוזיקה, משחק וריקוד.

קריירה

קארה הופיעה בתוכניות טלוויזיה עוד כילדה, תחילה בתוכניות בספרדית, ולאחר מכן גם בתוכניות באנגלית, לרבות The Electric Company ב-PBS. הקליטה שני אלבומים כבר בתקופת ילדותה והשתתפה במופע מחווה לדיוק אלינגטון לצד סטיבי וונדר, סמי דייוויס ג'וניור ורוברטה פלאק. כמו כן השתתפה במחזות זמר בברודוויי ובאוף ברודוויי, ובתוכנית הטלוויזיה Love of Life (בשנות ה-70). בשנת 1975 השתתפה בסרט הקולנוע Aaron Loves Angela, ובשנת 1976 בסרט Sparkle, בשניהם בתפקידים ראשיים. ב-1979 השתתפה בסדרת הטלוויזיה "שורשים: הדורות הבאים" וב-1980 בסדרה "טרגדיה בגיאנה: סיפורו של ג'ים ג'ונס".

חיים אישיים

קארה נישאה לפעלולן קונרד פאלמיסאנו בשנת 1986. השניים התגרשו ב-1991. התגוררה בפלורידה.

מותה

קארה נפטרה בביתה בפלורידה ב-25 בנובמבר 2022.[1] סיבת מותה טרשת עורקים, והתקף לב.
