האפיפיור אדריאנוס השני (בלטינית: Adrianus II;‏ 792 – 14 בדצמבר 872) היה האפיפיור מ-14 בדצמבר 867 עד מותו בשנת 872. הוא היה בן למשפחת אצולה רומאית והפך לאפיפיור בגיל מתקדם, למרות התנגדותו.[1]

ביוגרפיה

אדריאנוס נולד בשנת 792, וב-14 בדצמבר 867 נבחר לאפיפיור במקום ניקולאוס הראשון. הוא המשיך, אם כי עם פחות אנרגיה, את המדיניות של קודמו ניקולאוס הראשון. לותר השני, מלך לותרינגיה, שמת בשנת 869, השאיר את אדריאנוס כדי לתווך בין המלכים הפרנקים במטרה להבטיח לקיסר הפרנקי לואי השני את ירושתו של לותר השני, אחיו של לואי. אדריאנוס ביקש לשמור על יחסים טובים עם לואי, שכן המערכות האחרונות בדרום איטליה היו בעלי פוטנציאל לשחרר את האפיפיורות מהאיום הנשקף על ידי המוסלמים.[2]

פוטיוס, הפטריארך האקומני של קונסטנטינופול, זמן קצר אחרי המועצה שבה הכריז על התצהיר נגד ניקולאוס הראשון, גורש מהפטריארכיה על ידי קיסר חדש, בסיליוס המקדוני, שאהב את יריבו איגנציוס. המועצה האקומנית (שנחשבת למועצה הקתולית השמינית על ידי הכנסייה הקתולית) התכנסה כמועצה הרביעית של קונסטנטינופול כדי להחליט בעניין זה. במועצה זו אדריאנוס יוצג על ידי נציגים אשר ניהלו את גינויו של פטיוס ככופר, אבל לא הצליחו להגיע להבנה עם איגנטיוס בנושא שיפוט על הכנסייה הבולגרית.

בדומה לקודמו ניקולאוס הראשון, נאלץ אדריאנוס להכיר בעניינים חילוניים בהתערבותו של הקיסר לואי השני, שהציב אותו תחת פיקוחו של ארסניוס, הבישוף של אורטה, יועצו הסודי, ואחיינו של ארסניוס אנסטסיוס, הספרן.

אדריאנוס התחתן בנעוריו עם אישה בשם סטפניה, אשר ילדה לו בת, ושניהם עדיין חיו בעת בחירתו, ולאחר מכן גרו איתו ארמון הלטראנו. בשנת 868, הם הובלו ונרצחו על ידי בנו של ארסניוס, אלות'ריוס, אשר התחתן בכפייה עם הבת.[3]

אדריאנוס מת ב-14 בדצמבר 872 אחרי חמש שנים בדיוק לכהונתו כאפיפיור, ויוחנן השמיני נבחר לאפיפיור במקומו.
