The Road to Los Angeles ("Camiño a Los Angeles") é unha novela escrita en 1933 polo italo-americano John Fante, publicada por vez primeira en 1985. É o primeiro volume (o cuarto por orde de publicación) da tetraloxía con Arturo Bandini como protagonista.

Trama

Arturo Bandini é un rapaz de dezaoito anos, orfo de pai (aínda que Svevo aparece na precuela de 1937), que vive coa súa nai enferma e coa súa irmá Mona, fanática relixiosa. O seu soño é ser un grande escritor, pero traballa nunha fábrica de conservas, sendo esta a única fonte de ingresos do fogar tras a morte do seu pai, xunto con algunhas achegas do irmán da nai.

Le autores como Friedrich Nietzsche ou Oswald Spengler, pero só por pura megalomanía, pois non entende a metade. Estas lecturas sérvenlle para ter unha falsa erudición verbal, con moitos termos cultos pero libre de substancia, o que fai que se ridiculice a si mesmo.

Colecciona imaxes eróticas de mulleres espidas, ás que idolatra como deusas. Porén, un día destrúeas nun ataque de moralidade, que lle chega por unha frustración contra a intolerancia monacal perenne da súa irmá e as responsabilidades inquietantes da nai.

Narración

Arturo é un rapaz novo, megalómano, groseiro, racista e intolerante. O autor parece delinear un antiheroe negativo, mesquiño e soberbio, pero o que emerxe é un personaxe que se ri dos seus propios gromos neuróticos, mal adaptado ás convencións da vida civilizada.

A obra está narrada en primeira persoa, pero isto non contribúe á identificarse co protagonista: a fina e áspera ironía que xorde do contraste entre as intencións claras de Arturo e os acontecementos que finalmente teñen lugar. A narración converte a novela nunha sátira da forma de ver o mundo solipsista e egocéntrico, fronte ao mundo real ao que non logra adaptarse

A trama desenvólvese nos Ánxeles (California), entre o barrio pobre onde viven e a factoría conserveira situada no peirao. Está ambientada a comezos da década de 1930, durante a Gran Depresión.
