Sistema de referencia

En cinemática, un sistema de referencia é un conxunto de convencións para poder referir a posición dun obxecto físico no tempo e o espazo. En mecánica clásica frecuentemente úsase o termo para referirse a un sistema de coordenadas ortogonais para o espazo euclidiano (dados dous sistemas de coordenadas dese tipo sempre existe un xiro e unha translación que relacionan as medidas deses dous sistemas de coordenadas).

Introdución

O primeiro elemento é o punto de referencia. Consiste nun punto escolleito ao chou, pertencente a un obxecto físico, a partir do cal tómanse todas as medidas.

O segundo elemento son os eixes de coordenadas. Os eixes de coordenadas teñen como orixe o punto de referencia, e serven para determinar a dirección e o sentido do corpo en movemento. Cando o obxecto móvese en liña recta, só necesitamos un eixe. Cando se move por un plano fan falta dous eixes. Para movementos no espazo utilízanse tres eixes, ... o número de eixes corresponde co número de dimensións do espazo.

A convención para os eixes tridimensionais máis utilizada é a usual nas matemáticas, os chamados (x,y,z), onde o eixe x é horizontal, positivo cara á dereita e negativo cara á esquerda; o eixe y é vertical, positivo cara a arriba e negativo cara a abaixo; e o eixe z mide a profundidade, positivo cando se achega e negativo cando se afasta.

Cando se estudan movementos respecto da superficie da Terra, afaise a facer pasar o eixe y ou o eixe z polo centro da Terra, coa orixe de coordenadas situado na superficie.

O terceiro elemento é a orixe no tempo, un instante a partir do cal mídese o tempo. Este instante afaise coincidir cun suceso concreto, como o nacemento de Cristo que se utiliza como orixe no calendario cristián. En cinemática a orixe temporal coincide habitualmente co inicio do movemento que se estuda.

Estes tres elementos: punto de referencia, eixes de coordenadas e orixe temporal, forman o sistema de referencia. Para poder utilizar un sistema de referencia, con todo, necesítanse unhas unidades de medida que nos sirvan para medir. As unidades son convencionais e defínense tomando como referencia elementos fisicamente constantes. A un conxunto de unidades e as súas relacións chámaselle sistema de unidades. No Sistema Internacional de Unidades ou S.I., utilízase o metro como unidade do espazo e o segundo como unidade do tempo.

Sistema inercial

En mecánica clásica e teoría da relatividade especial un sistema inercial é aquel no que os símbolos de Christoffel obtidos a partir da función lagrangiana anúlanse. Nun sistema inercial non son necesarias forzas ficticias para describir o movemento das partículas observadas mediante o conxunto de convencións que describen o sistema de referencia.
